absolutely devastated.... w/ UPDATE in OP
UPDATE:
Thank you all for your prayers. The tumor is positioned in such a way that we'd have to have Helmut's arm amputated, and even then, it's unlikely that they'd be able to get all of the cancer (because it's a very fast-spreading kind). He's not in any pain and is still moving and hopping and jumping around, and sitting outside even despite the weather (so stubborn, just like DH!). He will go to the vet every 2 weeks now for medicine (i don't know what kind, DH is not good with details) and to have fluid drained from the area. That's all we will do, because Helmut without an arm just wouldn't be Helmut. This is so incredibly heartbreaking for both of us, but especially DH, and I just ask that you keep us in your thoughts. Prognosis is 2-3 months before he's incapacitated and/or in pain, at which point, we'll be forced to make a dreadful decision.

I just got back from MIL's, after she called to tell me that DH's pride and joy, his cat Helmut, has a very agressive form of cancer. He has a giant tumor in his shoulder, which, if left untreated, gives him about 2 months until he's unable to walk. He's also had feline AIDS since 2004, and has been on medication since then. I am in tears thinking about how i'm going to tell DH the news when he gets home from work. They were inseperable from when Helmut was born on DH's prom night 14 years ago, until we moved out of MIL's house in November. We didn't take Helmut b/c he's indoor outdoor, and we were concerned about him getting acclamated to a new neighborhood. But DH visits him at least 2x a week, and we just bought him a leash the other day so we can bring him over for visits. Now we need to decide whether to bring him to a kitty oncologist in plainview, or.... idk. I don't know how i'm gonna tell DH.
Here's a pic I took 20 mins ago at MIL's. You can see the tumor on his right shoulder (left side of pic). And a pic of our buddy at a happier time (watching Dexter).
Please pray for him.
