Re: Accidentally left a dozen eggs out overnight...
To ensure food safety when using eggs, USDA's Meat and Poultry Hotline suggests that consumers do the following: Take eggs straight home from the grocery store and refrigerate them right away. Check to be sure your refrigerator is set at 40°F or below. Don't take eggs out of the carton to put them in the refrigerator - the carton protects them. Keep the eggs in the coldest part of the refrigerator - not on the door. If eggs remain at room temperature for more than two hours, then they should not be eaten.
Hope that helps

If they are refrigerated first then you can't leave them out. If they haven't been refrigerated then you can leave them out.
I buy my eggs from the shelf not the refrigerated. And they don't have white eggs here, and sometimes there are feathers on them.

Eggs shouldn't be refridgerated ideally.
That's only fresh eggs- if you buy them from a fridge, they need ot go in a fridge.
In the UK our supermarket eggs aren't refridgerated and we don't refridgerate them normally.
Interesting!
Here in the US, we buy and keep them refrigerated.
american eggs are washed/scrubbed while european eggs are not. The scrubbed eggshells have certain protective layers weakened / damaged... and are much more likely to contain hairline cracks that allow bacteria through the shell. Therefore, they have to be stored in the refrigerator.
another nerdy link explaining something in painful detail from marriedinportjeff
hope this helps...
(and yeah, pitch those eggs )

I think I'd laugh if I saw a feather on my egg.

Yes! Same here! I don't know anyone who has seen a white egg! Honestly, you can't buy them in the supermarkets! You can however quite readily buy Duck Eggs, Quails Eggs and the multibreed blue and green eggs.

Sometimes mine have more than just feathers on them
I'm all screwed up here when it comes to eggs, I guess! Like Rachel and KlingKlang, I buy mine off the shelf. But when I get them home I put them in the fridge!
And, by the way, I left them out overnight once and I ate them anyway. And I'm still alive.

Re: Accidentally left a dozen eggs out overnight...
ok you probably made a decision already since I'm posting so late but as the keeper of chickens I often get between 30 & 46 eggs per week from my flock. Here are the rules, you can verify this info all over the internet- store bought eggs are usually about 2-3 weeks old by the time they get to our stores. They are NOT refrigerated until the get on the trucks, after that they are kept cold. Once eggs have been refrigerated they should continue to be, but they will not spoil if they aren't. They just may get a texture change. Chickens eggs are safe for human consumption for 6 weeks-probably longer.
Most of the world DOES not refrigerate their eggs, only here with the corrupt USDA & FDA that allows all sorts of henious ingridents in our foods do we have such asinine rules. I do not refrigerate my eggs, we eat them within a couple of days or give them away the day after they are laid.
The color of the eggshell has nothing to do with nutrition. It is solely based on the color of the chicken's earlobe-yes chickens have earlobes. The way a chicken was raised has a much higher impact on nutrition than anything else. White eggs sold in US supermarkets are produced by battery chickens that are pumped with chemicals like steroids & antibiotics from the time they are hatched. They live horrid short lives, usually dying from ovarian cancer within a year. personally I would never buy those eggs.

Considering how many steroids, antibiotics, carcinogenic pesticides, poisonous food dye & gluten products that the USDA knowingly allows in our food supply I would never count on their advice for the safety of my family.

A little chicky poop on the outside of an egg is fine. Don't wash it, it send the bacteria into the egg

OMG two pages on bad eggs ???
That's what I was thinking when I found my post had 42 replies! I went away Thurs afternoon and came back tonight so I hadn't checked this post.
THANKS for all the responses... I learned a lot about eggs.
I'm haven't thrown the eggs out yet... i'm going to do that water test that kimchee posted just out of curiosity. I'll prob toss them though based on what KellyFG and a couple others said.
