Re: Advice on how to handle this situation
i think you should trust your first instinct... but i would also wait till you have all the prices... hopefully another guy is lower and you can use that as an excuse...

Re: Advice on how to handle this situation
If you are getting a weird vibe, go with the estimate that you liked.
Don't feel weird about not using him. If anything is said to you, all you have to say is, I needed the work done asap, and he procrastinated to give me a quote.
Business is business, those that are on top of their game win, those that stall lose.

Re: Advice on how to handle this situation
Don't ever feel forced to "use" someone.
If your vibe from him isnt so good, even if he's cheaper, I'd still go w/ your instinct.
All you need to do is say the other guy was cheaper and thats what it came down to. Thats all. You really dont need to owe anyone an explanation.

Well, you're not the one making it awkward, their friend that is flighty is.

Agreed. Besides, if something went wrong I feel it would be even more awkward.

Re: Advice on how to handle this situation
I agree - go with your gut.
You went with the guy that explained it & got back to you with a quote.
End of story.
I am sure MANY contractors are used to bidding on jobs. Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose.
My DH is an electrician & luckily at a busy job. One thing for sure is there are MANY electricians out of work so you should be able to get a reasonable price. As an example - Local #3 has a 54 weeks wait to get a job...

Re: Advice on how to handle this situation
could always say that a friend of the family is related to the guy you choose... small white lie... (ie.. its my cousins friend etc..)... cant compete with the "family hookup" ya know?
ITA with everything stated above... and you should NEVER feel pressured into using a recommendation that does not make you feel comfortable. no matter who it is from...
