Advice on running to loose weight (first timer)
I'm convinced after reading a thread on this forum that running will shed pounds off quickly. I'm not sure if I should start myself slow like jogging for 10 minutes first or just run as long as I can take it. I've only walked a mile or so for exercise. Advice appreciated.

Re: Advice on running to loose weight (first timer)
I've never done it but have heard a lot of positive feedback about the Couch to 5K program.
I also see a lot of people rotating between walking fast and running on the treadmill when I do go to the gym.
Note: If you go that route make sure not to hold on. This is a common mistake people make and doesn't help with weight loss. You need to move your arms.

I don't do any programs. I make goals for myself. Either a distance or time. You need to gauge where you are at the first few times. Go to a track and see how far you can go. Push yourself. And then make goals from there. Increase your speed. And then increase by your distance.

Start with walk-running. Jog for 30 sec or a minute, then walk for double that. Repeat for 20-30 mins. Build up from there. Don't push yourself too hard at the beginning or you won't follow through. GL!

I 100% agree with this... I did C25K last year, and I really liked it. I was not a runner AT ALL, and really wasn't in good shape because I hadn't really been doing much exercise. The thought behind C25K is that a lot of beginning runners try to do too much too soon and then either get discouraged and quit, or injure themselves by pushing too far. So it helps you start from square one (running 60 seconds at a time, and then doing a walking interval) and build up in baby steps. Each week the running parts get longer and the walking parts get shorter/less frequent until you are running for 30 minutes straight. I was able to get through the program. I did the running outside, as it was less boring for me.
With running, I would just say to focus on time/distance at first and NOT on speed. I found I could get through the longer runs, even when I thought I couldn't, but sometimes I was running so slow that I could have walked faster, lol.
But I also have to say that while I was doing C25K, I only lost about 6-7 lbs. I was watching my diet, kinda/sorta, but I wasn't really that focused on what I was eating (portions, etc.). When I went back to WW, I lost 30 lbs in about 5 months. Now that I am back at my goal weight, I have focused on stepping up my activity to tone up (just started the T-25 Beachbody videos about 2 weeks ago, took a zumba class over the summer, etc.).
But for me, food/nutrition is by far the biggest component to weight loss, and the exercise is a plus for health considerations and toning. Even doing high intensity activities, people don't tend to burn as many calories as they think. One extra slice of pizza or one dessert more than makes up for any exercise the average "active" person does on a regular basis.
Good luck with your running, though! I did like C25K and would recommend it.

Re: Advice on running to loose weight (first timer)
Running does help you lose weight but 1. nothing is going to make pounds shed off too quickly and 2. you do have to watch your food intake when you do it.
When I'm running a lot, I eat more--I'm just hungrier and I've definitely ate too much at times after a long run. So if you do begin running, know that your appetite will increase but you need to be careful with what and how much you eat.
Other than that, running is an amazing way to see results in your body. Just be careful with food--sometimes the hunger doesn't even hit me until later in the day or the next day so just be aware of it.

YES! this is SO true! i have gained weight training for marathons! i used to run under the idea that it was enough to keep me fit and in shape.. and while that is true it is possible to think that since you ran, you can indulge (a little too much in my case!) also i have learned the benefit of adding weight training and high intensity intervals into my exercice regime! i never realized how important that is! i was essentially a 'fat' runner but since watching my carbs and adding the weights i run better and have kept weight off better. bottom line- do not ONLY run for weight loss and do not think b/c you ran you can eat anything! wish i'd known this before!

Advice on running to loose weight (first timer)
Running is great I think more for MAINTAINING weight rather than losing weight. It is more your diet. So a healthy diet and running in conjunction will do wonders.
Now, if only I can get back on that wagon...
