AFP Testing at 18 weeks.....who got this and who opted not to?

I have the triple screen test in a 2 weeks and i am right now leaning on not getting it done. Just wondering what you ladies all did.

we opted out of the AFP. We did the ultrascreen (sono) and the blood test and that all came back fine so I did not feel the need for the AFP test.

I had it done. I had all the tests done that I could - we decided that if they all came back OK then we would not have the amnio.

All my tests came back OK so we skipped the amnio!

We had the Nuchal test at 12 weeks and that was fine, so I decided to skip it .

We decided to do it because I at least wanted to be informed if anything could be wrong, but it all came back fine.

Re: AFP Testing at 18 weeks.....who got this and who opted not to?

I had this with my first PG and the results were inaccurate. We went through a few weeks of being scared and hearing the worst for no reason.

We will not have it again when we get PG again.

The decision I think should be to get it, if you feel based ont he results, you would possibly have an Amnio and based on those results want to either terminate the PG or know FOR SURE if something is wrong with your child disability wise to prepare yourself for that ahead of time.

For those who dont do it, I think its a matter, liek in my case, of just hoping for the best and being prepared for the worst.

Re: AFP Testing at 18 weeks.....who got this and who opted not to?

I never had it sincde there is a high rate of false positives. If you get a positive result there si nothing that can be done, you just have to sit there for the next 4-5 months and worry, meanwhile there is a high likelihood that nothing is wrong.
If you would opt to abort if something was wring with the baby then this test is for you, I personally would not abort so my hubby and I decided against it. Plus, I have known a few ladies whose levels caused reason for concerna dn they went and delivered beautiful, healthy babies, and they ruined there pregnancy because of the anxiety.

FH and I decided against it. It wouldn't change anything except bring on stress so it wasn't worth it for us. I understand why people do it, just not something we wanted.

WE had any tests done that were offered, including the ultrascreen and the AFP. Although we would accept any results, we would feel better knowing in advance. Thankfully all is fine!

If ours comes back fine, then that will be it for the testing for us.

Re: AFP Testing at 18 weeks.....who got this and who opted not to?

I choose not to...

My Dr told me that @ the 20 week sono. he could tell alot of the results (for spina bifida, and a few others) but if the results were "bad" it would be too late to terminate...

I know I didnt want to terminate.. so I wait til the 20 week sono...

The AFP results have alot of false positives and I didnt wanna put myself through that!

We opted out b/c we knew we would not terminate no matter the results and we didn't want the extra stress during the pregnancy if the tests did come back positive for anything.

Us too! I had an AFP at 16 weeks- but from what I hear, the later you wait- the more accurate.

I had it with my first PG and got a false positive, so when I was PG with the twins I opted not to have it.
