AFP testing
i am going on Tuesday for my 16 week, some friends of mine were telling me they opted not to have the AFP testing done, they didn't want to know if something was wrong, b/c it wouldn't affect their decision to have the baby, did anyone else not get this test?? I'm very confused as to whether i should be having it or not, i heard there is a high false postive rate??? what's your opionions on this subject? TIA!!

Re: AFP testing
I did it with my last pregnancy because I figured it was just a blood test. If it came back with bad results, I know they have a very high false results rate. If it came back ok, I would have piece of mind. Its really up to you.

Re: AFP testing
I woudl definitely get it done. As the PP said, its just a blood test. If you get a positive you can decide to have an amnio, or not. But the peace of mind of getting a negative is very nice.
ETA: The false positive rate goes down after 16 weeks.

Re: AFP testing
You should really get it done. If you had the 12 week sono and all was good with measurement and the folds in the babys neck then this will be fine too at least thats what my doctor told me

Re: AFP testing
I skipped the AFP (triple screen) for the exact reasons you stated. High false positive rate, and in the end there is NO way i would terminate my pregnancy if the markers came back truly positive. True AFP testing should be done between 16-18 weeks of pg. The high false pos rate is because the baby could be younger or older than you and the dr think, putting the age of the range where they compare numbers too.
I did not also take the test because if something came back abnormal, I would not want to do the amnio, which carries a risk a miscarriage, then deal the stress of worrying the rest of my pg whether or not my baby has down syndrome or spina bifida. There is no way i could follow it through. I figured I am relatively young, healthy, none of my family member on either side have ever been born with any defects, down syndrome, etc.
That was the best decision for us, just consider the results, would you opt for more testing if it came back abnormal? OR you could be perfectly okay and get a piece of mind.
FOr us, whatever god created and blessed us with will be just fine.

I too opted to skip it for the same reasons... I work in a daycare, and I cant tell you how many moms had false positives... I actually think more moms had false positives then real positives...
