Re: AFP Testing

I forget what it stands for, but it's a blood test that tests for spina bifida and a few other birth defects. You have the right to refuse the test if you want. By law your doctor has to get your permission when he/she's going to do the test. You have to sign some form.

Why will you be having an Amnio did your doctor already tell you you had to have one? I am not sure when the amnio is done. I know that the level II sono is done at 20 weeks.

No she didnt tell me I had to have it done (I'm 32) but she said it was my choice. Im concerned about defects because they run strong in my family. I know the amnio is 99% accurate. I want the reassurance really. I want to do everything I can to know the health of my baby.

My first cousin has spina bifida. My 2 first cousins have Fragile X. My other first cousin was born with an open skull - I cant remember the name of this - and died hours later. My other cousin has Aspergers syndrome and one other was born with an open spine (not spina bifida but I cant remember the name of this...)

I would like to do all I can to make sure my baby is OK.

Re: AFP Testing

I had actually refused this test because 7 people I know got false positives and had perfectly healthy babies.

Re: AFP Testing

I got mine back in about 10 days....

I had with my first a SKY high result and it was completly wrong, my cousin who was PG at the same time, had the same thing. I later lost my daughter but she was 100% healthy from defects, my cousin has a healthy 8 yr old now.

The falso positive rate is greater then 50% I believe. They will send you if positive for a level II sono and you should be able to get good results with that.

With mine my level II was normal , but they suggested an amnio...due to the problems I was having with contractions ( too early) in the PG, they said my chance of pre term labor after the amnio was 25%...WAY too high for me.

Everyones decision is ther own, just make sure you know all the information before making a decision so you dont worry needlessly...

Hope the test is FINE!

Re: AFP Testing

there is a high rate of false positives - lots of heartache and worry and unnecessary amnios are done because of them....my last 3 friends to get pg all had + AFPs, and lost their minds, then after the amnios were told it was a false alarm

that is why I wont have one if I get PG again. I would not do anything about it if the baby had a defect , theres very little they can do anyway if there was, so I would deal with it at birth. I couldnt hanlde all the stress it creates.

Re: AFP Testing

I'm passing on this test as well. Since I'm 35, there are alot of false positives. I had it done w/Delaney and all results were great.

I was told that a lot of the false positives occur when the test is done too early. My doctor said that after 16 weeks, the chance of false positive drops.

I did not do this test. Too many false positives.....I had 3 gf's think their babies were sick(spinal bifida) and all of them were perfect. My nurse practioner kinda rolled her eyes when she handed me the pamphlet on this test.
