After the Chris Benoit family tragedy: Congress Wants Hearings For Steroids In Wrestling
Congress Wants Hearings For Steroids In Wrestling
The Chris Benoit situation was a senseless tragedy and has has affected countless people both in and out of the wrestling industry. The story has gained tremendous mainstream attention and its affect on the overall landscape of professional wrestling is not yet fully understood.
However - it is clear within World Wrestling Entertainment that a "worst case scenario" would be major involvement by the United States government into their subculture. It now appears the worst may become a reality.
Congressman Cliff Stearns, a republican from Florida, said 89 wrestlers had died before the age of 50 between 1985 and 2006, and he called on Congress to investigate.
"This abnormally high number of deaths of young, fit athletes should raise congressional alarms," Stearns said. "Congress needs to investigate the recent events and find out how big of a problem steroid use is in professional wrestling. Steroid use is a major public health problem that deserves Congress' full attention."
Former pro wrestler , better known as Konnan, agrees with Cliff Stearns. "I welcome the congressman's comments and I am definitely available to testify about the exploitation in wrestling. The wrestling life needs to be investigated. It's a draconian work schedule. We're on the road year-round. No other profession is that physical. At least touring rock bands get a few months to recuperate. Baseball players and football players get time off. But in wrestling, you can't take time off to recuperate because you might wind up losing your job. If Congress thought baseball was bad, just wait until they look into wrestling. I hope they do it soon. People are dying."

congress needs to worry about more important things - like Bin Laden, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, the US losing jobs to India, China etc
People are always looking for the quick answer- Steriods made him do it- I don't think it's that simple

I agree.... While it was certainly a tragedy, I really don't think that this should be a concern for congress right now.

I don't follow wrestling - are they considered athletes or entertainers, or a combination of both?

it's really interesting all the information they are finding - but they really need to wait for the toxicology report before they use the steroid theory.
it's the easiest argument to make and i really think there is much more to this

Re: After the Chris Benoit family tragedy: Congress Wants Hearings For Steroids In Wrestling
The reason I ask is that while I recognize that steroid use is a problem, I wonder how many young entertainers have died in the last 20 years from drug or alcohol overdoses. Why is this so important that Congress would intervene?
Does the WWE have any internal review board that would investigate steroid use, like they did in baseball?

they have a wellness program, but there have been reports that it is seriously defective
good point re: other entertainers

great point- look at young hollywood in the past and today- how many more deaths have occured
and how many people are on the brink
Steriods are bad when abused- but there are ways around testing- and I bet most do HGH- which isn't detectable by a test- b/c it's something your body produces- and when used right can have amazing results

Re: After the Chris Benoit family tragedy: Congress Wants Hearings For Steroids In Wrestling
im still having trouble with this roid rage theory though
i'm not versed in steroid use, but i thought a rage included swift acts of violence
in this case, the murders occurred over a 2 day period - i wouldn't think a rage would last this long
he tied the wife up, and bibles were found next to both bodies - it sounds more pre-meditated than an act of rage
one theory to support roid rage, was that he killed the wife in a fit of rage. Then, realizing what he had done, he knew he'd go to prison and his son would be without parents.
The son murder was a mercy killing. Then he killed himself so that they'd all be together.

didn't congress investigate baseballs steroid use already?
and what came of that?
they really shouldn't waste our money on this.

i don't think anything came of it
but baseball hasn't had the number of deaths that wrestling has had
89 deaths since 1985 is not something to be ignored

good theory- you are correct about "roid rage" -
and this theory does imply more then just steriod abuse- which I agree with
I know a decent amount about steriods-not all steriods make you "rage"- from looking at the pics of him- he doesn't look huge to me- but it depends on what his natural size was

im not so sure
there was a major steroid scandal in the mid 90's that vince escaped
but since that time, there have been three very high profile deaths
one was a freak accident, but speaks to the unreasonable demands vince puts on his performers
one was drug related
and this one is likely also to be drug related.

if anything- I see this coming down hard on Vince- esp in light of what happened in the past
But I don't think this is something for congress to involve themselves in - I am not sure whose job it is- but to me- it's not for congress

wow- I had no idea the number was that high
it's a really rough business
i've watched countless documentaries and read all sorts of testimonials from these guys
you perform 300 days a year - very little time at home - meaning your marriage and family relationships suffer
they have no insurance - you either wrestle hurt, or risk losing your spot on the card - or your job altogether. So, guys rely alot on pain pills which can cause addiction.
wrestling promotes performers that are larger than life. All the guys at the top are very muscular - promoting steroid use for the guys trying to break in.
Then there are the vices that come from being away for long stretches - drugs, alcohol, infidelity. Taking pills to sleep, taking pills to wake up. Combine that with the pain pills or any performance enhancers and it's a deadly cocktail.

unfortunately, it may have to
i know what you're saying about more important things
but wrestling has no union or regulatory body like MLB, NBA or NFL

wow- that is really sad
but the fact that they don't have insurace thru the WWE is gross to me
and I bet it's hard to get private insurace b/c I was reading Jake's AFLAC book and once you take money for a fight- or I bet a wrestling match- you aren't covered - anything considered "Professional"

private insurance for all of that stuff is through the roof
many can't afford it and don't
they wrestle hurt and rely on pain pills
and they spend so much money on their addictions, that when these injuries really take their toll and these guys can't go at 100% anymore, they retire broke.
There are guys that I remember growing up, selling out the main event in MSG, who are now in their 50's, working a match a high school gym for $500 a show.
They can't perform anymore, but need the money and have nothing else to fall back on.

I think they need some MAJOR reforms at the WWE- if animals were being treated like this- PETA would be all over it- someone needs to stand up for these poor guys
