Afterschool/evening school events for K-2
I am just curious and want to bring it up at the next PTA meeting. How many of your schools schedule afterschool evening events? I have heard of dances/game nights etc. in my friends other schools. My son's school does none of these things, even PTA meetings are at 10am every other month. As a working parent (which I am sure many parents are) it is extremely frustrating. Even the celebrations are smack in the middle of the day. I am just curious what your schools/PTA's plan.

All of our activities are done at night - we have game nights, movie nights, harvest festival, milk and cookies, etc.
The only activities that are done during the day are for students only, like the holiday or book fair - not including class parties.

We don't have too many events but a good number of them are in the evening- the Fall Festival, Story Night, a couple movie nights. I think Halloween is the only one where I know some of the moms tried to leave early, but otherwise they don't have too much at all during the day.

Liz, all of ours are at night. Except obvious class parties. That really stinks.

That's not fair... Our PTA meetings alternate month to month from 9:30AM to 7:30PM & I'd say about 75% of activities are afterschool.

Our school has nothing. Parties are during school. PTA meetings are mornings. I had no idea other schools did evening parties. Maybe next year at the new school but in her current one activities are mid day, during school hours.

Re: Afterschool/evening school events for K-2
Thanks all. I am just curious. I had a bunch of friends whose kids went to K this year and I am seeing all the cute things they do (and all the things I remember doing as a kid with my parents at night). I am probably particularly hormonal and bitter that I couldn't go to a celebration this week, but I am going to bring it up. My friends son was recognized at our meeting this week which was at 10 am and I would have loved to go (and my friend had to take a day off from work - actually two because the original date was the day of the snow day). I am also sad because on SEVERAL occasions my son has asked me to be a stay at home mom so I can come to his school. Oh the plight of a working man.

Holiday parties are done during the school day. So are book fairs, holiday boutiques, some award ceremonies that are also assemblies for the school.
PTA meetings alternate each month between morning and evening.
We also have a good amount of evening activities...family movie night, spooky/safe halloween, game night, etc.

Most things are done during the day, with the exception of PTA meeting every other month. Some parents don't make it, I think (in this area) people wouldn't do night time activities.

PTA and BOE meetings are held at night. Parent events (speakers, parent teacher conferences) are held at night. School plays, movie nights, some festivals, and other events are held at night and some festivals are also held on the weekend. Even the book fair had a night option for parents to attend during back to school/meet the teacher night.
In school during the day kids have: class parties, crafts with class parents, mystery readers, assembly, school trips, and field day.
There are some smaller in class events for parents to attend including: Thanksgiving St. Patrick's Day Mother's Day Father's Day
As soon as I was made aware of in school events I communicated the dates with all of the parents to give them as much notice as possible for attending the in school events. The school has not provided all parents with the info for St. Patrick's day, but my feeling was that working parents would want to be able to plan their schedule a month out when I was given the dates and times. (I am my son's class mom. Typically I go in a few times a month to do crafts, read stories, bring snacks, and assist the teacher.)

They must have heard you. Lol. Did you get the flyer about the school party at united skates? I've been wondering why all the other elementary schools have had a bunch of field trips and evening/weekend festivities. One of them just had a PTA fundraiser at a catering hall. Why our PTA doesn't do things like this, boggles my mind. I just assumed the morning PTA meetings are to accommodate parents who work nights and can't make the ones at 7pm. Definitely bring up your concerns at the next meeting.

I know...lol....But its a 5th grade fundraiser and it is so expensive. My friend went to the last morning PTA meeting because her son won the reflection contest and she said that the other winners, the PTA board, and the principal was there. She said (and a good point) that by having it in the morning, excludes a whole group (the teachers) anyways. As long as DH doesn't have to work the next meeting, I will be there!
