Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
I have a long time for this - lol - but I was thinking about it. What do you do when you're on the same school calendar as your little one? I'm thinking of things like Jordan's first day of kindergarten - his first day of school will be first day of school for students at my school too. I will not miss something like that for the world, but I know it will be greatly frowned upon that I come in late to school that day. Just curious if any of you have had issues with this.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
I'll have this issue next Sept. & I'm all ready planning on coming into school late that day. I'm hoping that the first days will not fall on the exact same day.
DH works nights, so I'm thinking he'll have to make a lot of the shows, etc. & I'll probably have him video them for me. It'll break my heart.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
It sucks. I think about all the things I am going to miss. Plus I teach in the city so it is impossible for me to be last or leave early for stuff like that. Luckily DH's schedule is very flexible and he will be able to do all that type of stuff and video tape it for me.

Unless I leave the county by the time he starts kindergarten, we will always be on same schedule.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
Well for the first day of school, I'll come in late. I figure being late twice (I have two DC's) on the first day of school over a 30 year career isn't that awful. Right?
As for special events, DH and I will have to alternate. I don't plan on missing too much.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
im def going to have this problem in the future and my current principal is hit or miss on understanding these things. I will be doing my best to be at as many events as possible. DH may end up being at more than me since Im 50 min away and DHs school is less than 10 min away from where we live.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
As a first grade teacher, I would never, ever miss any part of the first day of school. My DH will be the one to take DD to her first day of Kindergarten (and all other subsequent years!). I just see it as a small sacrifice in the big scheme of things. I will, however, take off a 1/2 day or whole day here and there to attend school events for DD.
ETA: Don't get me wrong, it makes me TOTALLY sad to miss out on things like that, but I figure I'll be around for a lot more things than other working moms, that I can't really complain.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
I'm really worried about this and DH and I are BOTH teachers in NYC. Hopefully it is not the same day as my first day of school.

I missed my daughters nursery last day show this year, and did feel bad about it. I will try to make it to some of these events in the future!

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
I plan on trying my best to make as many things as possible. I teach at a HS so I leave way before DS would even start school. Fortunately, DH works 12 hour shifts and doesn't go in until 11 am. He will be around in the mornings.

The same for me, first grade and I LOVE my job, my carreer, and I feel i am a happier person for being able to be a working mom. luckily, DH has a great rotating schedule so he is usually off first day of school or its not a big deal for him to take off. This year DD's 2nd Bday is the second to last day of school, JUNE 24th..while I cannot possibly take off DH will take off again this year so DD isnt at the sitter for her Bday, we consider ourselves very lucky!

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
The only special day I don't take off for is the first day of school. I feel it starts my students' year off on a poor note if I do that. I'm not sure if I really feel this way or if I just convinced myself that I do, but REALLY, how important is seeing a kid get on the bus? It's over and done in 2 seconds, and I saw the pictures.
That said, I DO take off for every other special event I'm invited to. I feel that we are only invited for such a short period of time (up till what? Maybe 5th grade?), and soon our kids will be bigger and won't care if we come or not, so I'm going while I'm invited and appreciated! Those days coupled with days off when they are sick puts me in negative sick days by the end of every year and I don't care a bit!

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
Both DH and I are HS teachers, and I work in the district where we live. Many of the moms I work with are able to work coverage out and come in late on the first days of kindergarten. For the other special events, I will have to pick and choose and see what happens. I have heard it can be a little awkward in my district, because I cannot just "call in sick" and then show up on an elementary school trip. We'll see when the time comes. I am grateful to have holidays and summers off with DS, so if I miss some of the parties and such during the day, I'll have to live with the mommy-guilt! That begins when they are born and continues forever, I guess!

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
I'm a BTDT mom this year since DD is just finishing her kindergarten year. I am a HS teacher and i am very grateful that my administration (LI district) is so supportive about attending these special events. I was told to come in late on the first day and take lots of pics of DD getting on the bus. I was so lucky since I will remember that day forever!
Here is a list of things I attended: first day getting DD on bus halloween parade reading celebration gingerbread house decorating writing celebration DD's class bday celebration field day parent-teacher conference graduation
A lot happens in kindergarten and I am very grateful that I was able to attend it all.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
I definitely will be there for her first day of kindergarten. Other teachers I work with have set the precendent recently, so that helps. My current principal is very understanding about family related things. Unfortunately, he will retire after next year. But that is one thing I do not plan to miss. DD is also my only child which makes it even more important to me (not saying that people w/ more than one hold the event in any less regard but if I'm not there, that's it.)
As for other events, I guess we'll plan as we go along.

Re: Teacher Mommies - Question about Missing School for DC's events
I started to cry thinking about missing DD first day of kindergarten in 5 years! lol My principal is usually pretty good with stuff during the year I know a lot of our teachers go to special events at their child's school all teh time but I'm not too sure how he would feel about missing the first day at our school - he's very hard to read too
