Age for riding bikes with friends
So my mom was always nutty with giving us any kind of I dependence when we were young. I think the summer between 5/6th grade, I was finally able to walk to my neighbors houses independently.
Where I live kids start getting a lot of independence around 2/3rd grade. My son’s friend has been allowed to ride his bike to my house independently since last year (8 years old/2nd grade). We live .3 miles away. I still think it is “far” for my son to ride alone but I have let him ride with his friend this year (3rd grade). My mom and sister think I am crazy.
So when do you think kids should be allowed to ride bikes with their friends (without a parent supervising) in your neighborhood?

Re: Age for riding bikes with friends
My son's started riding around with friends in 3rd grade with a lot of restrictions as to how far they could go. Each year since then they have been allowed to go farther.

5th grade. Sorry but 8 is still too young for me. Too many crazy people in the world. Should have a friend test what they would do if a stranger approaches them. Did that when they were 7 and they failed.

Age for riding bikes with friends
I see kids in my neighborhood who can’t be more than 5 or 6 riding alone. I am always floored. I would think 8 or 9 at the youngest.

This. I don't trust drivers either. I still don't Iike her riding without us but I have to try and let go a little at some point.

Same here. I trust DS but I don't trust others. Actually DS was going out by himself only until 6th grade when he already had a phone.

Age for riding bikes with friends
Thanks everyone. As of now, I wouldn’t let him go by himself, but I do feel comfortable when there are 4-5 kids biking together and they are going directly from house 1 to house 2 (we text when they leave and arrive). I just didn’t know what others let their kids do. I also wonder if some things are regional - kids here seem to have more freedom. When I say every kid over 7 (except my son) is gallivanting around the neighborhood without an adult, I am not exaggerating.

Re: Age for riding bikes with friends
My daughter is in 2nd grade and I would be uncomfortable letting her ride alone.

I think it depends on region and neighborhood. I let my son go to friends houses then on his bike and up to our neigbhorhood school with friends. All very close, no crossing of busy roads. My 7th grader can bike into town now with friends BUT he can't bike certain friends houses still. Our town isn't big but our school district is laid out really funny.

Re: Age for riding bikes with friends
I started in 5th grade. I would say most of DS' friends started then also. The difference between his friends is the distance they are allowed to go. I am very strict with him and his parameters but some of these kids are allowed to go all over town (mostly youngest in the family kids).
For me, I don't allow him to go that far because I don't trust him. He does not always look both ways. His head is in the clouds not paying attention a lot. Until I am confident he is aware of his surroundings, he is not going any further.

That's how i feel about my daughter. Sometimes I have to steer her out of the way of walking into telephone poles and what not as we walk down the street. I have personally seen her run out in front of cars on my block - she definitely has her head in the clouds. At 12 I was babysitting an infant- I feel like she is WAY less mature and responsible than I was at her age to be honest.

My mom insists it was between 5th/6th with friends, but I think it was earlier for me. I know she was more neurotic with my youngest sister.

Re: Age for riding bikes with friends
I would never let my 8 year old ride around the neighborhood alone. I think 12 for riding alone to a friends house. 10 to ride around the neighborhood with a group of friends, no busy streets, must stay in the neighborhood.

I think 3rd grade? I had limits as to how far I could go though - and we lived in a hilly area lol.

Age for riding bikes with friends
Thanks again.
I think if I lived on LI - specifically in Nassau where I grew up - I would never even think about letting him ride his bike with friends in third grade. People were always driving down my neighborhood block like maniacs as many stated earlier. I live in a very different area than LI so that probably plays into things quite a bit in terms of traffic and how neighbors are set up in general.

I was about to say this. I never saw very young children riding bikes or walking to school alone when I lived on LI or in the city but I see it all the time where I live now. I think it’s very different north of the city (and I’m not very far north at all). In general, there seems to be far less parental oversight up here.

Where I live (North Western Nassau) kids are out riding bikes all the time. Many kids walk to school alone or with friends. I think it depends on the town/neighborhood. I have an abnormal fear of kidnapping so I would never let an 8 year old ride their bike alone no matter where I lived. There are crazy people everywhere.

On LI and tons of kids riding bikes everyday. Mostly middle school boys but have seen younger kids coming by at all times of the day.

Nothing has really changed since we were kids with kidnapping. There is just more media on it.

No, I know but my mom made me watch the Adam Walsh made for TV movie like 40 times as a child so I have grown up with a highly abnormal fear of kidnapping. I also have a huge fear of school shootings and I have to remind myself daily that it is extremely unlikely.

My mom was similar so that’s why I think it’s strange that everyone in my neighbor lets their kids roam freely alone. I’ve let my son ride with friends to his friend’s house and it gives me anxiety.

I’m not saying it as a positive. I never saw 5/6 year olds riding bikes alone on LI. I see it all the time here and I think it’s ridiculous. The traffic here is just as bad as on LI and there are mostly winding roads with blind turns.

Yeah I feel like sometimes I question the decision making of parents. I also see a ton of kids around here riding bikes without helmets.

Car seat safety/lack thereof is another thing that drives me mad with parents I see. Kids in the wrong car seats, out of the car seat too soon , forward facing too soon or lately in the front seat when they are WAY too small to be up there with the airbag drives me BATTY!!!!
