Google "negative calorie foods" --- there are long lists out there of foods that burn more calories being digested then they contain in them. It takes more calories to break them down/digest the fiber then the food contains. Many of the free fruits and veggies on the WW PP program are on this list.

I've been doing WW since January of 2010. I was doing it before and after the new program rolled out last November. So many people were skeptical and I am very active on the WW boards, a lot of people got mixed answers from their WW leaders.

Bottom line that I think has been the best advice anyone gave me, is that you have to find the right balance of free fruits/veggies for you and YOUR body. Some people have to stop at 5 servings of fruits/veg a day. Some people could have 9-11 servings a day (me included) and not have it slow down their weight loss. Also keep in mind that for people over 300 lbs WW recommends 9 servings of fruits/veggies a day.

I think what WW was going for was getting people to eat whole, healthy and unprocessed foods over processed snacks. So many people were chosing things like 100cal packs over an apple, when the apple is clearly far healthier for you. They wanted to lead people back to those more natural snacks, and I think the free fruits/veggies was a great idea.

If you are doubting it, you can double track for a week. I do this from time to time to make sure I am on target with my nutrients. I use sparkpeople.com which is free. You enter all your info and then you can do online food diaries. It breaks everything down into carbs, protien, fat, and smaller micronutrients and gives you ranges for each day. Even with 9+ fruits veggies which I tend to get in each day, I was still within my recommended ranges for carbs, calories, sugars, etc each day.

Hope this helps,
Melissa

I think this is definitely on target. I find myself reaching for fruit much more than I normally would. Its definitely pushing me towards it.

I am glad to hear that you are losing even with the free fruit and that you still are under your caloric intake each day despite the free fruit.

We shall see, so far, so good for me with this plan!

Listen, I started out in Jan of 2010 with over 200 lbs to lose. I had been overweight my entire life. I have so far lost 157 lbs on WW. Right now my WW efforts are somewhat paused since I am 17 weeks pregnant. I am still tracking my food and getting in my Good Health Guidelines every day, but added in some extra points as per my doctor's recommendations. However I am still active on the WW boards. They are keeping my head in the right place during the pregnancy so that I don't over-gain.

WW has completley changed my life. Losing this much weight is MAJOR. I am an entirely different person then I was a year and a half ago and while I know I did the hard work, it wouldn't have been possible if not for such a great, well rounded program. WW has me active again. After being pretty much a sedintary person, I can ride a 20 mile bike ride on a Saturday, go home and clean the house top to bottom and live to tell the tale the next day. I could not have imagined that 2 years ago. 2 years ago it hurt to walk.

So yes, I think that WW knows exactly what they are doing. And they are a flexible enough program that if you find something that *isn't* working for you, there is room for the program to be tweaked until it works for you, and the majority of the leaders have the knowledge to help you do that.

I wish you all of the best =)

I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day, I don't worry about the number of carbs in them and I have managed to maintain a significant weight loss for years. Sure if you eat 3500 extra calories in fruit, you will gain weight, but thats true of anything.

Weight watchers is a very livable program for most people.

IDK. All I can say is I cut out most of my bread, potatoes and pasta for 12 weeks and ate mostly fruit and veggies and lost 24lbs.

After I wont he biggest loser contest I decided to go back for " a while" and gained it all back in 6 months! :( So Im going to give it a shot again. I did feel MUCH better and had lots more energy. I think all the processed carbs are so addicting!

Im not sure about too many fruits or veggies. I dont think I COULD eat too much. I think my belly would stop me before I got to that point, but I always have room for cookies and ice cream and chips etc. KWIM? lol

Anyway, I was no help Chat Icon

Re: Agree or disagree with this statement - People don't become overweight eating too much fruit and vegetables.

The free fruit and veggie program allowed me to lose 26 lbs so far.

it points me towards healthier choices which gives me more energy and makes me healthier overall.

I could easily eat 5-7 servings of fruit a day and eat 4-5 servings of veggies.

I don't believe for a second that someone gained weight eating too many green beans unless they ate 2 lbs of cookies with the 2 lbs of green beans.

You can't eat everything else and then say fruit and veggies are free. Some denial going on there.

Obviously its great to reach for a healthier snack or food choice such as fruits and veggies. And yes, it would take a lot more "Work" to gain weight eatng those foods than a box of ding dongs, however, my point is that they still contain calories and if you are eating over your caloric needs you will gain weight regardless of what you eat. Talk to most bodybuilders who eat clean (fruits, veggies, protein good fats) when going on a bulk and they will tell you that it is completely possible to gain weight from this.

Just like anything else you can gain weight from eating too much of anything. The way the program works is that you eat enough of low calorie high fiber foods that make you not want to eat other foods or quantities of other foods. They other foods are portioned thus the points. So if you are eating a gazillion green beans and apples you won't eat other things.

It works, I'm living proof and when I have my one point egg white veggie omelet and 3 servings of cut up fruit I am satisfied to wait until lunch which is high protein, low carb and high fiber. it makes you eat better so you eat less stuff that is higher in calories and fat.

If you are a body builder and you are eating clean and working out you are gaining muscle which will make you gain weight.

Re: Agree or disagree with this statement - People don't become overweight eating too much fruit and vegetables.

I think that was the point of the question..or at least I took it as "Is it possible" to gain weight while eating too much fruit and veggies...and as you just said, it's possible from eating too much of ANYTHING.

I did WW for a long time and while I lost some weight on it, it didn't work for me. Especially the core plan that allowed "free" foosd just as the new plan does (within serving limitations)

If it works for you great...my beef with it is that it while it teaches you to reach for healthy things (YAY!) it CAN give the impression that fruits and veggies are FREE and have no caloric content.

And yes, in bulkin you will be gaining muscle but with ANY claoric surplus, there is some fat that comes with it. Trust me. Im livng proof of that.

The fruits and veggies are free if you portion out the stuff that isn't. You can't eat cheeseburgers and eat all the fruit and veggies you want in addition to the fries..kwim? I think I'd spolde!

WW tells you that if you try to use the older plan with the free fruit and veggie program it won't work.

Not every plan is for everybody.

This.

Points on the new plan are higher to compensate for the free fruits /veggies. Obviously if you ate a ridiculous amount, you would gain weight but it is calculated based on a realistic and reasonable amount.

I also think there is a big difference between someone wanting to be a healthy weight and someone looking to compete in a fitness competition. Neither are wrong, it's just different expectations about how they would like their body to look and the goals they've made for themselvesChat Icon

100 percent agree. It's the truth. People are overweight from animal fat, processed sugar, and taking the fiber out of grains. 1 orange has 40 calories, no fat, and 4 grams of fiber. If you eat 4, you'll be stuffed and not gain weight. I stuff myself off fruit and the next morning I am down on the scale.

While fruits do contain a lot of carbs and sugar, I can see what the purpose of the message is: you aren't sitting at Weight Watchers because you love fruits and veggies and that's all you eat. Most people (myself included) end up at Weight Watchers because they eat completely the wrong things.

If someone ate fast food, chips, and ice cream all day long and they switched to fruit and veggies all day long- they would probably lose weight (despite the fact the fruit has the carbs and sugar). It's just better for you than fast food, chips, cookies, cake, etc. I feel like the statement is geared more toward that group of people (which sadly, before WW used to include me!!).

I think as far the message goes- yes you can gain weight from eating too many fruits, but no, I don't think you'll become obese because you eat too many fruits.
