Ahh...I'm so confused, please help me...
I got laid off 3 weeks ago, and I interviewed this week and just got the job offer.
The job itself, sounds interesting, its different from what I'm used to, and in Long Island (ive always worked in the city).
Everything about it sounds good-except the pay, I was expecting about 10k more. I dont know what to do.
I also wanted to take a makeup course-which they have during the day, but doesnt start until December (its for 2 weeks). I can also take it on Saturdays.
I really am torn here..lol. Any suggestions on how I could ask for more? Thanks!

Re: Ahh...I'm so confused, please help me...
honestly I would take the job, in this market you don't really know what other offers might come your way and what else you might have to sacrifice w/ any other future offers.
I'd take the make up class on Saturdays since its something you've wanted to do anyway.
is it 10K less than you made in the city? or 10K less than you wanted? if its less than the city, just remember you won't be dealing w/ the train and won't be paying for a metrocard every month (although not knowing how far it is in Long Island, obviously gas prices could potentially surpass Metrocard costs)
good luck with your decision, and most of all CONGRATS on being offered a job after only 3 weeks out!!!!
ETA- if you wanted an angle to how you can ask for more $$, perhaps you can estimate how much you'd be spending on gas and see if they'd raise your salary by your commuting expenses, so at least your take home pay isn't reduced by traveling costs....just a thought!

ITA. I would take it if it is a job you would enjoy. Especially if there is room for growth.

My commute doesn't cost me anywhere near $10k per year. It's a few hundred dollars per month.
If I worked on LI, I'd have to pay for gas to commute to and from work. It could possibly even out, tough the city is likely a bit more expensive.
I'd probably take a $10k pay cut to work on LI just to escape the hassle and time of commuting... Someone looking in a different salary bracket, however, may not be able to take that kind of pay cut. To others, it could be nothing. To me, it would just about be worth it.

I would take it and I have before. I've taken a bigger cut although I eventually went back to the city a few years later.
what about taking it and continuing to look?

if the offer is MORE than you are taking home in unemployment, take the job.
if you are taking home more in unemployment, then I would consider continuing to look. (though technically I think you cannot continue taking unemployment if you get a "reasonable" job offer)

What industry are you in? Pay tends to be a little less on LI than the city.
What about benefits, vacation time, 401k, etc. Are they better? This "hidden paycheck" is important and could make the compensation more than your other job.
Have you countered back with a reasonable offer?
Considering the market, I would probably take it anyway.
Good luck!

Re: Ahh...I'm so confused, please help me...
My dh started a job a couple months ago and he was able to negotiate a higher salary. They offered him less then he wanted so he spoke to then and got then to a point that he felt comfortable taking the job. It's worth a shot.

Re: Ahh...I'm so confused, please help me...
I commuted to NYC for years because I didn't want to take a pay cut at a LI job. After I had a child, I realized that i needed to be closer to home, and took a job on Long Island for less money - like, 30K less! Let me tell you it was the BEST thing I EVER did! My life changed dramatically for the better, and while I do notice the difference in income, it has not significantly affected my lifestyle. Good luck!

It does not hurt to ask for more but even if they don't give it to you, I would take it. At this stage of the economy I would think you are very lucky to get a job offer!

I could take it and continue to look-most of the jobs that I see -are in the city-and this job is in LI, so it would be hard for me to interview..thats one thing.

Thats the thing-the industry is totally different from my last job. Benefits-are pretty good, vacation time is great, and 401k (which Ive never head bevefore) is offerend now.
I countered back, but the manager said it was the best they could do, but they wanted me to think about it.

I comletely agree with this! The only thing, I live in Queens, so the commute isnt as bad as it is from LI.
If I got a job in the city, the commute would be 40 min, atleast. This job is 25-30 minutes away..and since my DH works in the area, we could carpool together.

Congrats on the offer.. While it's a paycut, you won't have to pay for the train or subway into the city anymore..

I was unemployed for 5.5 months and if I was you I would take the job. Yes it may be a pay cut, but it is a job, and in todays market you cannot afford to pass it up. You have no idea when the next offer will come along.

ITA. I would take it because the market right now is so bad with so many people applying for the same position that it is impossible to even be considered. You are very lucky to find something this fast as for my DH who been unemployed for 3 months so far and he got no offers at all after all he sent out. I would take it if everything is good forget about the 10K cut and you will be saving on commutes. Good luck in what ever you decide.

I would take it. Ask for some additional vacation days as a deal sweetner. Stay there three months and use some of those days to look.
