Airport See-through Scanners
Scanners that see through clothing installed in US airports
Article
NEW YORK (AFP) - Security scanners which can see through passengers' clothing and reveal details of their body underneath are being installed in 10 US airports, the US Transportation Security Administration said Tuesday.
A random selection of travellers getting ready to board airplanes in Washington, New York's Kennedy, Los Angeles and other key hubs will be shut in the glass booths while a three-dimensional image is made of their body beneath their clothes.
The booths close around the passenger and emit "millimeter waves" that go through cloth to identify metal, plastics, ceramics, chemical materials and explosives, according to the TSA.
While it allows the security screeners -- looking at the images in a separate room -- to clearly see the passenger's sexual organs as well as other details of their bodies, the passenger's face is blurred, TSA said in a statement on its website.
The scan only takes seconds and is to replace the physical pat-downs of people that is currently widespread in airports.
TSA began introducing the body scanners in airports in April, first in the Phoenix, Arizona terminal.
The installation is picking up this month, with machines in place or planned for airports in Washington (Reagan National and Baltimore-Washington International), Dallas, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Miami and Detroit.
But the new machines have provoked worries among passengers and rights activists.
"People have no idea how graphic the images are," Barry Steinhardt, director of the technology and liberty program at the American Civil Liberties Union, told AFP.
The ACLU said in a statement that passengers expecting privacy underneath their clothing "should not be required to display highly personal details of their bodies such as evidence of mastectomies, colostomy appliances, penile implants, catheter tubes and the size of their breasts or genitals as a pre-requisite to boarding a plane."
Besides masking their faces, the TSA says on its website, the images made "will not be printed stored or transmitted."
"Once the transportation security officer has viewed the image and resolved anomalies, the image is erased from the screen permanently. The officer is unable to print, export, store or transmit the image."
Lara Uselding, a TSA spokeswoman, added that passengers are not obliged to accept the new machines.
"The passengers can choose between the body imaging and the pat-down," she told AFP.
TSA foresees 30 of the machines installed across the country by the end of 2008. In Europe, Amsterdam's Schipol airport is already using the scanners.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
honestly, it doesn't bother me. i like that the faces are distorted/blurred. i would like to know if they plan on separating males/females into two lines and having the screeners only check passengers of the same sex. but truthfully, i find pat-downs more invasive. at least with this, you're in, you're out, you're done, and no one has to touch you. plus, whatever is "seen" is behind closed doors.
my DH works for customs and i know that besides helping them see if someone is carrying an explosive, it would also be a HUGE help in finding internal carriers (drug mules).
would i have a different opinion of my DH didn't do this for a living? possibly... but IMO, our safety should be our #1 concern, not our modesty.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
I'm pretty sure I've already been in one of those in Fort Lauderdale Airport.
I didn't even know what it was! Next time I'll be blushing going through.
It doesn't really bother me though...whatever they feel will make things safe is fine.
ETA: nevermind- I just read they started it in April...I wonder what that thing was in florida... It was a walk in box- all glass.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
I guess I'm in the minority here... I normally have NO problems with the increased airport security, but I HARDLY see this as necessary. The only thing that makes me not get really upset about it is this (from the article):
"The passengers can choose between the body imaging and the pat-down," she told AFP.
If that's the case, fine... but if they start randomly forcing people to do the body imaging, I think that crosses a line to me. I don't think there is enough of a potential benefit to virtually "strip search" passengers.
Also, I realize that, for example, some stores have dressing rooms that are monitored to prevent theft... Well, that to me is totally different. You can control what you take off / leave on and you don't normally have to remove your underwear.
Would people feel the same way about this if it wasn't done through techonology, but rather you had to strip naked and stand in front of an airport security guard (even assuming your face was still masked)?

This actually happened to a friend of mine coming home from Miami international from my bachelorette party in 06. She said it was like a wind tunnel in there.
The more security, the better, so bring it on.

That's something else -- it's supposed to detect the tiniest specs of explosive material.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
Considering that the terroriats will stop at nothing to have a repeat of 9/11- I am all for this technology. Sorry but everone's privacy should go out the window to prevent this from happening again.
Right after 9/11 everyone was all for this type of technology- ANYTHING to keep us safe again. Well, technology has finally caught up, but we've grown complacent again, so people are complaining.
I was AMAZED at what got "accidently" through airport security over the past few years- 100% due to human error. This was stuff NOT reported on the news- stuff I saw with my own eyes while working as a flight attendant.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
Anything that increases security or keeps me safe, I'm all for.
There must be a reason also for such a drastic measure... I know I've heard reports before about stuff getting thru security that shouldn't so I really want to believe that there's a reason for this, so I don't mind.

I'm with you also. I would never agree to that. It's to great of an invasion of privacy and I don't think we would be any safer.
I also don't believe this for a second: "Once the transportation security officer has viewed the image and resolved anomalies, the image is erased from the screen permanently. The officer is unable to print, export, store or transmit the image."
It doesn't make sense to me. If they find something they can't keep a copy of the image to use as evidence? What good is that. And if they alleged that I had something on my body I would want to see the image.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
A while ago, they were talking on TV about that technology coming out in the airport. I don't know if anybody has seen what you can see but WOW.... it's explicit. It looks like a blury naked pic. They were discussing that there is actually another technology that does not go as far as seeing naked people and just as effective but security airport chose not to go that way. Wonder why?
I think this is WAY past privacy issues. I can see the young/pretty girls being targeted as well as some men.
I see this as a demeaning tool.
I can see abuse of this system since this is "random". So some people will feel targeted for more than just being a potential terrorist.
I would take the pat down anytime over this.
I do not believe for a second that you cannot record images. The tech might not but I am sure the master server can. Without a doubt!
I am sure some people will have a lot of fun commenting on people's body.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
If this is oh-so necessary for our security, then why weren't they just randomly strip searching passengers, but hiding their faces? The end result is essentially the same, just less time consuming.
I honestly REALLY do not see the huge benefit from these.
I also don't believe they cannot save the images. You'd think they'd want to be able to save any potential evidence they find, right? So why design a system where you cannot save the image that led to your further search of a particular individual?

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that images will be viewed by same-sex security officers. I honestly don't have any issues with it. If it helps to keep me safe, then so be it.

actually i would prefer they searched EVERYONE - not just a few random people.
and i don't think it will take all that much more time - TSA and customs officers are well trained to detect things in x-rays, etc., and they are more cautious than most of us realize. do they miss stuff? sure. but this new machine will make "missing" something that much less likely to happen.

Re: Airport See-through Scanners
There is really no need to virtually strip search passengers. Images won't be saved -- sure. Faceless - right.
When the airports stop selling things that can be construed as weapons (metal nail files, etc) then I would maybe take extereme security measures seriously. They won't even ban matches because they are too hard to find in bags & pockets.
