I have heard good things about Aldi's from people in Ohio and NC. I am actually thinking of trying the one in bay Shore. Its not super close for us, but figured it would be something different.

Funny, I just asked my mom and she said she went to the one in Bay Shore and they hated it. She said everything was off label, it was expensive for the sizes, and they would never buy anything there. My parents are big bargain shoppers, they go to the grocery outlet Amelias in PA, so for them to not want to go there, it must be bad.

After reading this thread, I stopped at the one in Bay Shore today as I was on my way home from work b/c I really needed broccoli for dinner tonight. I never even knew it was there until last night and I commute on Sunrise every day! Anyway, I wouldn't make it my main grocery store but it's not bad for some things. I got a pretty big broccoli crown (99 cents), a pineapple ($1.99), and a pint of blueberries ($2.49). Thought those prices were pretty good. I didn't buy anything else; I try not to buy junk food or frozen foods, but I'd run in again for some produce or milk/eggs and possibly some other staples.

Aldi's here in Chicago are decent. They have pretty good prices on staple items and produce. I never go there to do all my shopping, but have got there for a few items here and there. They do have some name brands, but not a lot.
The only thing I don't like is that they don't bag your stuff and you have pay for a bag each time. Also you have to put 25 cents in the cart to get it out of the corral, but you get it back if you put it back in the corral.
I grew up going to Aldi in Germany, my parents always made it a point to stop there at one point during our visits b/c everything was of good quality and great prices. The whole buy a bag/ bring your own bag is something that is done in supermarkets throughout germany..if you don't have a bag you have to pay for one (just there way of being "green") and the concept of the quarter for a shopping cart is the same, thats something they do in Germany (maybe all of Europe I'm not sure) I personally think its a great concept to avoid shopping carts being left aimlessly all over the parking lots!
Aldi and Trader Joes are the same company ..Aldi has just been around a lot longer. I'm excited they are slowly starting to come to NY!

I just went to the Bayshore Aldi for the first time last week. It's a totally drifferent shopping experience, but I will absolutely shop there again.
Some things to know before you go: You have to put a quarter in the shopping cart in order to unlock it; you get it back once you put the cart back. They have boxes you can use like Costco does, otherwise bring your own bags, as they don't provide them. If you're organized in the way you put your stuff up on the belt, you probably won't have much trouble bagging as it's rung up, but if you're not fast enough there is long counter in the front that you can pull up to to bag your stuff on - the cashiers don't bag.
I don't mind generic brands, if you do this probably isn't the place for you as most stuff is off label.
For pantry staples like broth, canned tomatoes, canned beans, etc. I don't think you can beat the prices. I bought various types ranging from .49-.69/can. I've already made chili using the tomatoes and beans I bought there and I couldn't tell the difference from the name brands I use.
We're not big into snacks, but we are having people over for the game on Sunday. Full size bags of potato chips, tortilla chips, pretzels, etc. were all in the $1-$2 range. Picked up blocks of cheddar, monteray jack, etc. for I think $1.50? Definitely worth checking out if you're having a party for those sorts of things.
Didn't have a ton of fresh food - meat/dairy/produce - but what they did have was priced fairly, although you could probably do just as well if you bought what was on sale at the other grocery stores that week.

Im in NC.
I went in one once when I was on a hunt for a large amount of poblanos & hit every other supermarket in the area.
Never went in again. A little too basic for me, I buy a lot of organic, fresh veggies & often. Just didn't have much of what I wanted/needed to buy.

I shop at Aldi regularly. Its a discount store with a wide variety of products that are private labeled, in the same way Trader Joe's food is. They have great produce at great prices, and their free range chickens are superb and cheap. They do excellent "copies" of cereals, and their chocolate is amazing. They had a strange system where you put your groceries back in the cart after they are rung up at the till and you take them to a bagging area to bag.
These are all across Europe and everybody shops there, there is no stigma attached (there used to be about 10 or 15 years ago)
I heart Aldi!
