Alimentum/Nutramigen moms who tried to move on to soy formula
Anyone know how long it takes to know if dc can tolerate the soy or not? Will this be quick or could it take a few weeks to know? We started giving DD soy last night inadvertently (that's what happens when DH makes the bottles ) though I was planning to try after the 3-month mark anyway. She had some straight soy formula; when I realized what happened, I made the next few bottles 1/2 soy, 1/2 Alimentum since that was how the ped suggested we try it but I don't know how long to give it before we go whole hog and then how long before we know if dd's OK? She was pretty fussy today, but she's also not napping well and battling a little cold so I think it was unrelated esp since she's been extra fussy for a few days now since getting sick but who knows. Just not sure how to tell since the milk protein allergy presented itself very early and with clear evidence (blood specks in poop) so now I'm not sure how to tell if she's doing ok on the soy. Sorry so long, just a little worried over here...

But how do I know if she's ok on the new stuff? Will I know quickly or could it be a few weeks before a problem presents itself?

Re: Alimentum/Nutramigen moms who tried to move on to soy formula
I think it depends on the baby. For my daughter, we knew right away that soy wasn't going to work because she vomited everywhere after eating it and had severe gas afterwards. But some babies, it'll take a couple of days to a couple of weeks for it to start affecting their digestive tract and become painful. I'd give it a few days, especially since you said she's not feeling well already, maybe start the transition after she's feeling better so that you know for sure. HTH!

thanks - we've aborted the attempt due to some screaming. this is the first time she's sick so it's too hard to tell what's bothering her.

Re: Alimentum/Nutramigen moms who tried to move on to soy formula
for abby it was with in a few days we noticed the difference. i dont know how old your dc is but i was told not to attempt the transition till after 6 months because by that point their digestive system has matured a little and if they have refulx its most likely getting better due to sitting up etc.
we're spending a week at each level of the transition so we will be able to see if thers a problem.

DD is a few days shy of 3 months old - the ped it was fine for us to try a few weeks ago once we knew the Zantac was working for her so that there wouldn't be too many variables. I actually was not planning on trying for a little while though because I was nervous and then DH opened the wrong RTF bottle and we decided to give it a shot and went half and half like the ped suggested. She's been a disaster but there's a lot going on - she was really fussy before the switch due to a cold, poor napping lately, and a potential dosage issue with the Zantac. We have a well visit this week so we'll know if the dosage needs to be adjusted based on her weight. I'm not sure what caused the screaming - it could've been the soy formula - meaning a soy protein allergy, it could've been any of the other things going on, and it also could've been the soy's bubbliness (it got very bubbly with the rice cereal and Alimentum, which Alimentum alone with rice cereal does not) so she's been gassier too. Who knows, but I tossed the rest of the RTF and will not be trying again anytime soon and certainly not if she has other issues. This attempt was an accident and was likely premature. Thanks for help ladies!
