You can always keep that milk for other reasons.
I use breast milk when DD scratches her face. It clears it up immediately. I also use it for diaper rash too...

Just an idea!

Chat Icon I know how hard it is to wean.

How much time do you have before going to work? If it is a couple of weeks then I'd slowly cut out feeding while continuing to pump. Because if you just quit all at once, you could end up with mastitis.

Yeah I know I now have to pump since I can't feed her or use my milk. I go back on December 1 so I should be able to do this right - I think.

There is nothing wrong with weaning and switching over to formula. I pumped for DS for 7 months and am almost completely weaned off. For the first 3-4 months I exclusively pumped every 3 hours around the clock (nights included) and eventually increased my time between pumping sessions every 4 days. Eventually I went from pumping every 3 hours to every 6 and then 8 hours. Once my supply couldn't keep up with DS, I was sad that I wasn't able to give DS BM. At the same time, I kept telling myself that any BM I could give him is good and that sooo many babies are formula fed. Even though I still miss giving him BM, I secretly enjoy not having to spend extra time washing pumping pieces and having more free time to spend with DS. I go with the philosophy "Happy Mommy Happy Baby."

I wish I COULD wean. My milk is not good for her. I just wish I learned this before yesterday when I started the post.

So now I need to

a) get rid of the thrush
and
b) get rid of my monster boobs

Fun times

ugh Chat Icon your situation sounds so frustrating Chat Icon

just keep asking the OB and Ped for advice, and you'll get through it eventually. I would also be so frustrated pouring all of that milk down the drain. sigh. but don't forget, you can't move forward if you look back... just do your best to focus on moving on.

BTW, that wonderful bonding moment (baby looking into mommy's eyes while BF'ing...) also happens while bottle feeding... so the most important part, that emotional bonding, will still be going strong Chat Icon Chat Icon

I feel for you Leslie, though my own circumstance was different.

Gianna is about a week older than Abby. She was a born nurser - no BF issues at all! However, I was hospitalised twice with postpartum pre-eclampsia once we'd come home. I pumped for a while when in the hospital away from her, but the baby was too lethargic, and although my MDs said it was ok, her pediatrician confirmed what we saw anyway: that the meds were too toxic in combination for her. It broke my heart to ween her so early - especially since we had to spend so much of her first three weeks away from each other - but the meds are keeping me alive, so there is no choice. I miss the bonding. And now that she has a cold and an ear infection, I cannot help but believe she would be better had we BFed longer.

To help with engorgement, I simply cut down on the amount of times in a day I pumped. I went from a full milk supply to not feeding in a few days with no problems at all.

Good luck!

I only was able to breastfeed Ben for 6 wks and he was supplemented with formula because I never produced enough to satisfy his appetite. When we weened him off breast milk, the discomfort for me lasted a few days and was helped with Motrin and a very tight sports bra. I hope your discomfort is short-lived! Leslie - the only thing I know is some women drink sage tea to dry themselves out - I'm pretty sure it's sage tea...
