All the recent illnesses
There's so much going around right now between the viscous stomach bug and the flu.. How does this typically work? Like lets say it's rampant in a community. Does it calm down after a few weeks? Or am I just gonna be a paranoid germaphobic nutjob until the spring?
(Obviously in the winter it is what it is, I just mean how it's particularly bad now with an unusual high number of cases) It can't keep up this momentum an entire 2 1/2 more months, right?

I find there is always something going around our community - for most of the year it's strep and stomach bug, during the winter flu is in there as well.

All the recent illnesses
I would love to know this as well.
I assume that since everyone gets together during the holidays, that accounts for all the spreading of germs you hear about the last couple of weeks of December heading into the New Year.
Then you have school - which is just one big petri dish of nastiness. Add the fact that everyone is mostly indoors when they get together with others. The winter is just one big old pool of germs until the warm weather comes along and people 'spread' out so to speak. This is another of many reasons as to why I despise the fall/winter months. Yuck!!

All the recent illnesses
At first I thought this year was particularly bad. Probably because it's my first winter as a mom of 2 and juggling 2 sick kids has made it much crazier. But then my Facebook memories has reminded me that my DS has basically had a stomach bug every year right around this time lol. I think it's unfortunately normal. I wouldn't get too crazy about it because even in the summer there are plenty of bugs going around. Just lots of hand washing!

Re: All the recent illnesses
There is always something going around. My whole family got the flu in late April last year and then DD got a bad virus in May. So it's not just the winter or the time of year.
The main thing should always be building up your immune system (I take some great supplements for immunity) and hand washing habits.
Saline nasal rinse is also great on a daily basis as a preventative. Studies have shown it reduces you getting colds because you are washing out the virus before it gets into your body while it's still trapped in your nose hairs, etc

Re: All the recent illnesses
When I was still working, I felt like my kids were always sick. They caught anything and everything that was going around.
Since becoming a SAHM, my kids are rarely sick. I am a hand washing Nazi. I carry hand wipes and anti bacterial gel around.
Knock on wood. we have been healthy all winter. Our friends are extra considerate since I am pregnant. They always give us a heads up if they were sick.

All the recent illnesses
Stomach bug is an all year round and the flu is almost 9 months out of the year. I don't worry about if he gets sick....if he does we deal with it. No matter how clean etc you are there are illnesses you can never avoid.

Re: All the recent illnesses
A good idea is to wash your child's jacket, backpack and lunch bag. Carrying those school germs into your home is just blah!!! I've seen some kids lunch boxes and they are filthy!! Knowing that they get thrown into a bucket to go to lunch is gross to me! I also put hand sanitizer on his lunch bag. Anything I can do to avoid illness! Not saying any of this is a sure thing. Just some things you can try

All the recent illnesses
The stomach bug is always worse around this time, and the fluish/fever type viruses are usually bad around April. But, there is always something going around!

Right, I know there's always stuff gojng around.. I just mean the very disproportionately high number of cases now verses even a month ago. Not sure I'm explaining this well lol

That's pretty much my thoughts. You really can't avoid it. I also feel like the more they get sick, the better immunity they build.

Re: All the recent illnesses
We are going on vacation next week and so far we've had the stomach virus and strep in the past 2 weeks. Hoping it ends there!
There does seem to be a large amount of illness though for some reason this year.

I just want to say that hand wipes and anti-bacterial gel really aren't the best things in the world. It is better to build up immune systems then to use those things....probably they don't get sick as much because they built up their immune systems when they were little.
I don't really stress sickness. It happens. We deal with it.

I agree. Except I'm really stressing the stomach bug this year - DS 2 caught 3 separate stomach bugs last year in an 8 day span (confirmed by blood tests), leading to two trips to the ER, an overnight hospital stay, numerous doctor vists and tests, gastritis as well as almost 4 weeks of puking... It makes me want to cry thinking about it.

Ugh, yeah that does NOT sound like fun. What crappy luck to get 3 different stomach bugs. Nuts!

I absolutely think it is because they got sick so often when they were younger. It's kind of like murphy's law that when I was working, they got sent home sick ALL the time. Now that I'm home, we've had very few, if any sick days. I really can't remember the last time I had to pick one of them up from school due to sickness after I stopped working.
Pretty sure I was a hand washing Nazi when they were younger as well and they would often be sick. I can only control when they are with me. I'm sure they don't wash their hands as often when they are at school.

I just meant the intensity of the number of people who are sick at the moment. I was wondering if these things lose momentum after a few weeks just in regards to the very high number of people who are sick at the moment. I think my post got lost in translation. makes sense in my head though!

I would think it's hard to say. Hopefully at least some things will die out but others probably won't. I think the flu is just getting started for one thing. It's widespread right now but last year we got to the point of epidemic. It does seem like it's on its way to that but hopefully the spread will slow down and maybe it just seems that way bc of everyone complaining about so many illnesses right now.

Yes, thank you, this is what I meant.
Like I imagine these things have to run their course over a couple weeks but not be this intense talk like March! Im usually not so cautious about these things, I let my DS do the things he likes.. we go to lots of museums, aquariums, play dates.. he's also in school. It's only the last few weeks that I refuse to even go to the library and hoping once this current wave of sicknesses goes down a bit we could resume normal life.

Yes, I feel exactly the same way. Someone asked me to meet up at the library after school and I thought no way am I going when the school age kids are there. I would go in the morning when it's quieter or just little ones but that's it's right now.

All the recent illnesses
My god I'm petrified of that stomach virus (I'm sipping on grape juice as I sit here lol). My dd will inevitably contract it from school though and then it's all over... we have been avoiding the library bc she always gets sick from there and it's just not worth it. Me and her had that stomach bug right before Easter this past year so it looks like it prob doesn't let up much.

The grape juice did absolutely nothing for us. I was giving it to her like mad because her cousins had the bug. The only thing it did was make for purple vomit when she got the virus and puked it all up. I drank it too and got the bug. I think that grape juice myth is horseshit to be honest and anyone who avoided the bug by taking it was just pure luck. They talk about it changing the environment of your stomach but your stomach is already FULL of acid on a daily basis and the bug survives it.

I don't believe in that grape juice thing either. It will not prevent you from getting sick. And this is the first year that I'm even hearing about it. How come doctors have never mentioned drinking it before????

I feel like it got its start on some blog that got Pinned on Pinterest and then all the mom groups got wind of it. The Welch's company probably started the rumor come to think of it
