Allergies in class

Help! My kids luckily don’t have food allergies, they start nursery school tomorrow (2 hours 2x a week). I just received an email from my boys teacher stating there is a child in the class with allergies: tree nuts, nuts, eggs, soy and to refrain from sending any of these items in. They are there for the lunch time period so I have to send them in with lunch. Any safe things to send? I bought the yogurt pouches, I’m not sure what else to send? They like PBJ literally EVERY DAY. My kids eat a jar of PB a week, I’m not really sure if they will even eat the yogurt, I bought ones with paw patrol on it to maybe entice them

will they warm up food for the kids? Maybe pasta or mac & cheese? Soups? If they won't warm up food, how about a cheese sandwich or even just a jelly sandwich?
Its tough when you have picky eaters!

Is there any way you can switch classes? Call the school and let them know your kids only eat pb&j and when you signed up you were not told they were peanut free?

I was thinking a cream cheese bagel if I get mini bagels, I think they may eat that! They won’t heat up, they recommend finger foods for lunch so I was thinking of PBJ crackers as part of their lunch but then I got this email! and it’s a small private school with just 2-4 year old classes and then they are grouped by age range so my only option is the one they are in! My one will eat fruit salads/ tomato with cheese but I wanted something with protein to keep them full and I know they eat the PB. I’m thinking of doing cold chicken strips for them with veggies. They do eat hummus but I’m trying to see if that has tree nuts? I know for sure my chicken cutlets will have eggs! I think they are asking for these things not to be sent in in case a kid grabs the food? They are a class of 8 with a teacher and assistant so I would think they can monitor the kids!

They make PB alternatives, Sun Butter is one I cant think of. I would go to Whole Foods. Or get a funtainer and pack hot food in it (soups, pasta, etc)

Bagel with cream cheese, mini pizzas, pasta salad, cold cut sandwiches, pancakes, waffles, quesadillas. I put hot food in a thermos for DD. She’s a nightmare to feed.

My daughter loves sun butter instead of peanut butter, she is in a nut free school and was only eating PB&J for awhile.

She also does bagels cream cheese, hummus & pita. Hummus is nut free.

Pretty much all classes and schools are nut free at this point.

Sun nut butter, thermos and hot food (chicken nuggets, pizza, noodles, Mac and cheese), pita with cut up deli meats or cheese, cereal with milk (mix in class), jelly sandwiches, bagels with butter or cream cheese are all out go to.

There is plenty for kids to eat that has no nuts.

I think I found sunbutter online! I’m going to get some tomorrow and have them try. I didn’t even know there was a difference with peanuts and tree nuts! I just don’t want my kids getting another kid sick. I never had to buy allergy alternative things so this is new for me

I saw hummus in the store and it said contains pine nuts, are those tree nuts? I didn’t get it just in case

Not all hummus has pine nuts - I usually get ours at trader joe's - just the classic hummus.

If it’s for 2 hours 2x a week I’d just send a fruit and pretzels, cheese stick or crackers. I would give them a PBJ when they get home.

Dd's school is not. She can bring pb&j for lunch, just not for a class snack if there is an allergy in the class that year.
I think at lunch they have a nut free table.

OP...bagel with butter or cream cheese. Mac and cheese or pasta with butter or sauce in a thermos.
Cheese sandwich
I have tried the sun butter and found it didn't taste like PB so not sure picky eaters would like it.

This. I'm actually surprised that there is a lunchtime considering the class is so short.

2 hours and they make you send lunch? Weird!

Anyway, I think they'd be fine with more snack-y items... yogurt, fruit, cheese sticks, etc.

DD just started nursery, too. I have a Thermos funtainer to keep DD's food warm. She doesn't care if it's really hot- she never eats it then anyway. Chat Icon

My lunch ideas are: quesadillas, mac & cheese, grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, bagel with veggie cream cheese, waffles, french toast sticks, pizza rolls, sausage & scrambled eggs, pasta, ravioli, Ham & Cheese or Turkey & Cheese, Mashed Potatoes & roasted chicken (I use the perdue short cuts), cereal.

Oatmeal if they'll do oatmeal, DD won't eat it.

My son usually brings chicken nuggets for lunch (but, he's elementary school). He also likes to bring bagels and yogurt.

I wouldn't kill yourself for 2 hrs 2x a week. Just don't send in peanut butter.

Many classrooms are peanut free but, schools that have cafeterias often let you bring in peanut products. At our school they have a nut table where those eating nut products sit. One of my son's besties has a peanut allergy so he makes sure to read the snack labels so he can eat lunch with him (he doesn't eat anything with nuts anyway but stays away also from may contain nuts).

Pine nuts are actually considered a seed, not a nut, and not classified under a tree nut allergy. Tree nuts are almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, etc.

DS has a peanut/tree nut allergy and pine nuts are not something he actually has to avoid.

I just wanted to say how sweet your son is to do that for his friend. That is awesome.

same for out school. it is not nut free and we can send in whatever for lunch and class unless there is an allergy. not sure if there is an allergy table.

my DD eats a bagel with cream cheese everyday for lunch and my DS eats mac and cheese everyday for lunch Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

im over it and wish they would not be so damn picky with eating.

they are there for only 2 days for 2 hours . i would just feed them a big breakfast if you dont think they can last the 2 hours and send in fruits and yogurt if they like yogurt for them to eat there and if they are still hungry let them eat a PB&J sandwich when you get them

Oh- my son has a tree nut allergy and we were told to avoid pine nuts because they were one of the many he’s allergic to

My kids school is not nut free, but most of the things I send are nut free anyway. Yogurt, fruit, cheese & crackers, cold cut sandwiches, veggies & hummus, string cheese, cream cheese & jelly sandwiches...my kids do not like foods in a thermos- but if they did I would send chicken nuggets, soup, pasta, meatballs, etc.

My son has always gone to nut free school that when he brought a Pb&j sandwich to camp I freaked. He the told me to was ok because no one was allergic and he also let the counselors know. Lol.

Anyway.,, he always packs the same crap: cold cut sandwiches, maybe try bologna, Mac and cheese, bagel with cream cheese and jelly or butter and jelly, chicken nuggets , waffles, pancakes, cinnamon French toast sticks, empanadas, pasta, pizza, tuna fish, hot dogs, lunchables

sides are yogurts, cheese nips, popcorn, chips, cookies, fruit, yogurt raisins, hostess muffins, Pudding, jello, special K crisp,
