allergy and birthday party question

ds has a dairy and nut allergy and was invited to a bday party. I told the mom and asked if she'd have something else besides pizza and she said no, that i should bring my own food for ds. is that the etiquette now? i don't mind but i figure if he's being invited then the mom might want to bring maybe bagels or something in case other kids have allergies too....

Re: allergy and birthday party question

Honestly, I probably wouldn't even consider offering this option at a party I was paying for unless someone close was coming who had allergies.

Or if I was sending something to school which is a nut free classroom.

It sucks but it's something you're going to have to face and expect for your child.

This is yet another reason I'm over throwing the big parties for DS.

Re: allergy and birthday party question

My child recently outgrew her dairy and chocolate allergy. I always brought a slice of cheeseless pizza or a bagel for her and a cupcake. I would never expect the host to get something special for my child. Only once did a mom ask me and got her a slice of pizza without the cheese. Most party places give only one choice and do not allow outside good. It is much easier for you to quietly bring something. I know many people with food allergies and they all bring food. Also most bring because they know what is in the food and no worry of allergic reaction.

Re: allergy and birthday party question

My friends whose DC have allergies always bring their own food/dessert so their DC doesn't feel left out. There are so many different food allergies and sensitivities now. While it's nice for the host to consider the allergies, I don't think I would expect the host to go out of their way to accommodate various food restrictions. If my DC had a severe food allergy, I'd also want to be the one to bring the food just to make sure that it was prepared properly.

Re: allergy and birthday party question

You're also better off being safe.

At school, they won't accept homemade birthday treats even if ingredients are labeled due to cross contamination in the kitchen the food is made.

Sorry but I think that's absurd to expect. If my DS had asthma and went to bounce u I wouldn't expect the party host to bring an inhaler.

If my child had allergies, I would bring something that I knew he/she could have, instead of expecting the hostess to provide it. That's a lot to put on someone, especially if the venue doesn't provide a "safe" alternative, and she has to go out and shop for it.

Re: allergy and birthday party question

I have one friend whose dd has severe allergies. She brings her food and her own cupcake to all parties. She even brings stuff to get togethers just in case the snacks/food is questionable.
