Allergy meds for a 2.5 year old
Do I have to contact my ped before I give my son allergy meds?
His eyes have been so itchy and he's sneezing like a maniac.

Re: Allergy meds for a 2.5 year old
if u want u can but if you know its allergy i would just give him something. we took ds also 2.5 yrs old to the ped bc his eye was really red and swollen and we weren't sure what it was. turns out its all allergy related.
we were told to try zyrtec, claratin or allegra whichever we preferred.
we tried zyrtec and claritin and it would only work for 8 hrs or so even though its a once a day. gave him allegra and its been great.

John gets 1/2 teaspoon of zyrtec every morning.

I think you can give it without contacting the ped. If he was under 2 I would contact them first.
If it's really bad you can do Claritin in the morning, and a dose of benadryl at night. I would start off with the claritin first, sometimes it takes 24-48 hours to really work.

Thanks!
Looks like I'll be picking up some Claritin later on! Poor boy!

Re: Allergy meds for a 2.5 year old
I haven't had much luck with Claritin. I spoke with the Ped this morning, she said the other drugs have the same results - but I'm going to give something else a try. I hate using medications, but I would recommend getting allergy meds as soon as possible otherwise it can really flare up - alt least that's what happened with my son. We're doing Benadryl at night and Claritin in the AM - also saline nasal spray and allergy eye drops (otc). My son is a little over 2.

Mason has been sooo bad too. His eyes get puffy and he itches like crazy. I wound up taking him to the Peds last Monday b/c his eyes were sooo swollen. They gave me drops for the eyes (fun putting that in )
I give him Allegra once a day with dinner and give him Benedryl at night with his milk (hidden in there) for the itching. He also has an Eczema cream and a cortisone I put on him after the bath for the rash and I've been giving him the oatmeal bath
Seems better since last week, but he's not 100%. Just can't wait for the seasonal allergies to end.
If you feel more comfortable call your Ped or check with the Pharmacist when you go to the drug store.

We've been doing 1 tsp of claritin every morning on JJ. It's worked well. It's a 24 hr dose too...
