Almost 5 month old kitten waking me up
We got a kitten about 3/4 weeks ago. He felt very comfortable right away at home. He was short of 4 months when we got him. He has been a wonderful addition, but the only problem is that he wakes me up at night (at 3 or 4 am and then at 6 am). He comes to me and starts purring and kneading and while he falls asleep, I stay awake for a long time. It is like having a new baby lol.
What can I do? Usually I don't do anything. I lay in there, and I don't pet back, but I'd like to know if there is something I could do, to be able to have a good night's sleep

I got a kitten at seven months. Her wake up calls were to run around me, my bed and my room like a race track! Lol. Short of closing the door there wasn't much I could do to stop it.
Good news? She grew out of it. I think your will too.

The purring and kneading will not stop. Did you get him when he was 6-8 weeks old? Or maybe he was 6-8 weeks old when he was taken away from his mother? I've noticed the way they knead (and if they knead) correlates with how young they were taken from their mom.
The way cats knead doesn't change. I have a 10 year old cat and when I picked him up (12 weeks old), he was a little purr machine. He was super shy when he got home, but about 2 AM I felt these tiny claws kneading at my hair and scalp. The frequency has lessened, but I still get woken up by this. Sometimes I move him in my sleep, but you really shouldn't do that because it can hurt their feelings.
The one thing that helped was getting a bigger bed, lol.
The kneading means they really love you and they do it to comfort themselves. It's one behavior you can't change, unfortunately.

This is what we do.
Our bedroom is off limits to the cats anyway- we did it over and want ONE room of the house to be cat hair free, and not destroyed by puking of hairballs, claws etc.
Plus we sleep better without them in and out.

Thank you. We got him when he was almost 4 months old, and he is now waking me up twice or three times. He does his purring and kneading on my chest and then falls sleep on my head or close to DH. I feel bad closing the door. We only did it once in the middle of the night, because I was extremely tired, but I felt bad. Maybe a bigger bed is going to be the solution

The way I broke my cat of this habit was every time she came to cuddle on my chest I would scoop her under my arm and roll over with her like a little teddy bear. She would either start purring and fall asleep or get frustrated she couldn't lay how she wanted and run off. Eventually she grew out of the habit and instead just cuddles at our feet until we wake up.
Does he have his own bed? Training him to sleep in one spot might be a solution too. Put a sweatshirt of yours in there so he can snuggle up in your smell, and he'll likely be less inclined to come kneading at you haha.
