Already posted on Diet & Fitness, but not sure it solely belongs there...
So I'll post it here too If it gets moved.. so be it...
Every year around this time I get the urge to go bike riding... but I don't have a bike. I don't even know what kind of bike to get. I'm thinking a mountain bike if I plan on using it on the street, on park trails, the boardwalk...
Any recommendations?

I am by no means an avid biker, I just bike around the neighborhood but when I bought my bike I bought a floor model from brands in Wantagh and got a better deal on it. If you don't want to spend alot and don't want to go "pro" that may be good for you too.
Have fun! Bike riding is so fun:)!

But what kind of bike am I looking for? Is a mountain bike the basic model? I'm seriously so clueless about this. And how much do they go for? I'm thinking it's gonna cost me somewhere around $200? Is that accurate?

You want to get a "hybrid" bike. If you go somewhere like Brands they will show you what you need. Be forewarned though, specialty bike shops tend to be expensive. You may be better off going to a Sports Authority or ****'s to just get a basic bike.

I have a Specialized Hardrock - it's a hybrid - I can either go on trails or the street. I've had it for years and have used it on all sorts of terrain.
I paid around $700 for it 5 yeras ago and it's still going strong

I know - expensive, right? I looked at it as an investment. I've kpet up with the maintenence on it, so I've saved myself in that department. I also had to get a men's bike, because I'm so tall that the women's models didn't "fit" with my legs.

That's why I recommend the sporting goods stores. You can get a good quality bike for around $150 to $200.
I paid $500 for my mountain bike seven years ago and it's still fine - and I use it for mountain biking so it takes a bit of a beating. But, I went with my sisters a few years ago to get their bikes and we just went to SA and they got basic bikes that they were comfortable on. Their bikes are still fine, and they didn't spend a lot on them.

What about those cute Hampton Cruisers? Is that just for like leisure biking? Not really good if you want to get a good work-out?

Re: Already posted on Diet & Fitness, but not sure it solely belongs there...
I have a Trek that I bought it for $550 in '99 when I was in college. It's very light, part of the reason why it was so expensive. I lived in walk-up apartments and lifted it onto car racks for traveling quite a bit back then.
I get it tuned up each season. It's an awesome bike and I don't forsee buying a new one ever.
