Re: Altering a disabled child so she will never grow up?
Posted by dandj Many disabled adults who are functioning at a 6 year old level, have very fulfilling lives. They work, have friends, go out to movies, dances, dinner...yes, they need supervision and daily care but that doesn't mean they can't experience things other adults do.
The blog says she functions at a 3 month age level though.

Re: Altering a disabled child so she will never grow up?
I am very torn on this issue. I work in healthcare and see these severely disabled people (with basically no brain function). I don't think any of us can judge these people because if we even lived one day of their lives our perspectives would be different. Keeping her small would probably improve her life for the mere fact that she would be easier to wash, move (prevent bedsores), and not have her suffering from the problems of hormones. And yes, removing the organs would eliminate the posibility of cancer in those areas regardless of family history. I am not saying I agree with this, just that I am not going to pass judgement on these people so quickly.

“This article brings to mind something I haven't thought of in years: I work at a hospital in Los Angeles. In 1980, we admitted a 24-year-old woman with the mentality of an infant, who resided in a nursing home. Her diagnosis? 16-week pregnancy. An abortion was performed - she went through labor pains because 26 years ago anesthetic wasn't nearly as safe at is now. No one knew who raped her, no one noticed for 4-months that her periods had stopped, and because no one cared about her, the only thing that happened was a perfunctory police report.”

My heart breaks for this little girl and her family. I can't even imagine having to make such a decision, but having worked in a nursing facility that cares for residents who are young but will never have any quality of life, I can understand the rational behind the procedures.
I agree on some level. I used to work in a group home for developmentally disabled women. The house's ob/gyn informed some of the staff that only 1 of the 9 women were still "in tact". The other 8 all had signs of multiple rape. The 1 that wasn't raped was raised by her parents until their deaths and then placed directly into the home where I worked.
I would want to keep my child at home for as long as I possibly could to care for her but more importantly I would make every effort that she is cared for by people I trust in the event of my death.
I can't see the necessity of altering my child when she cannot get pregnant to begin with...is it that they just don't want to deal with her menstrual cycle? why do they want to stunt her growth? so they can lift her easier when necessary? Removing her breasts to avoid sexual assault? Isn't she staying home anyway?
I didn't read the website so I don't know what other options they explored. I can say that it would have taken me years to come to such radical decisions. I can only imagine the heartbreak for everyone over the situation & over their decision.

I never gave any thought of rape. My mind thought was of Stage III and IV ulcers...they're not pretty, nor fun.
This young girl would not be going into a group home, she would eventually be in a nursing facility.

Re: Altering a disabled child so she will never grow up?
I think its sad so many people pass judgement when there no way all the facts and emotions could be presented in this short article. Who I am I to say this is wrong? I'm not in the shoes of these parents. I would only hope they are doing what they think is best for their daughter and not doing it for themselves, and who's to say which is the case with just this essay in hand.

Re: Altering a disabled child so she will never grow up?
oh my God!!!! I have no idea how to even react to all this. I wonder, How true is it that by stunting this poor girl into eternal childhood is actually for the best? I am not by any means a medical professional or know enough about this girl's situation to really judge what the parents choose to do...but still in today's day in age this is so shocking to hear.

Re: Altering a disabled child so she will never grow up?
I can see the argument for sterilization and in some ways I can see the argument for preventing her from getting her period. This is a person who will probably not understand what her period is and will require help with the sanitary aspects. I know, that leads to the question of whether these things should be done for the parents' convenience. I just don't know.
Removing her breasts is entirely too radical, IMO If some sicko wants to rape this girl, who's to say that he/she will be attracted only to big breasts? That's like saying that people who do get raped have asked for it.

"Afflicted with a severe brain impairment known as static encephalopathy, she cannot walk, talk, keep her head up in bed, or even swallow food. Her parents argued that “keeping her small” was the best way to improve the quality of her life, not to make life more convenient for them."
"They also feared that large breasts could put Ashley at risk of sexual assualt"
Although, does anyone remember a couple of years ago there was a bedridden woman who was either an invalid or retarded and had been sexually assaulted and was pregnant? Not being in their situation, maybe the parents did what they thought was best. I pray to God that those are decisions I never have to make. Yes, if I remember correctly she was assaulted by someone who worked in her home.
This is not the same thing though, to be honest. It is altering a persons physicality for the purpose of not letting her "grow up" physically. I am sorry but what are the side effects for this. Is she more at risk because of her other medical problems to have issues later on when receiving hormone shots? I think this is sick honestly. There are MANY other ways to "care" for their child.
