Alternative to eggs?

I see so many great recipes that I want to try but they almost all have eggs or egg whites. I really want to try some paleo recipes I have found but I feel like every single one has eggs.
Is there any (equally healthy) alternative to eggs in these recipes? I have a recent allergy and had to cut out all egg from my diet.

Re: Alternative to eggs?

In baked goods, you can substitute applesauce or ground flax seeds.

1/4c. applesauce = 1 egg

1 tbsp ground flax + 3 tbsp water (combine and let sit for 10-15 minutes) = 1 egg

That said, I know a lot of paleo recipes call for a lot of eggs, and I have never substituted more than 2-3 eggs, so I'm not sure how it would work out.

Alternative to eggs?

They sell egg replacer in a box at the health food stores. It's been a while since I have used it but I remember it was a powder and I think you mixed it with water

I use flax that I make into eggs, as a PP posted.

Thank you all so much. This is great information. It's good to know I can still make recipes that call for eggs.

Re: Alternative to eggs?

Just keep in mind that flaxseed can affect the effectiveness of BC pills, if anyone here is on them.

Studies are still being done about it, but my doctor has told me to stay away from flaxseed because it can make the pill less effective. Apparently it can mimic estrogen...which stinks, because I miss flax.

Wow that's interesting! I can't believe I've never heard that. The only thing I've ever heard was that antibiotics affected BC.

It happened to come up in conversation since I'm a vegetarian - I said something about using flax as a source of Omega-3s. Doctor knows that we're childfree by choice and told me that I should stay away from flax because we don't want any surprises Chat Icon

There's info online about it too...not much...it seems like it's fairly new info.

And yes - antibiotics can affect it, as can some sinus meds. I'm sure there are other drugs that can affect it's effectiveness too, I just haven't had to look into it because I haven't had to take them :knock wood:

You can use the "Better Than Eggs" stuff I'm sure.

Alternative to eggs?

Flax-eggs have worked the best IMO. My MIL tries to replace applesauce for eggs all the time when baking bc SIL is allergic to egg whites and the cakes always come out with a weird texture. I do flax-eggs and have never had an issue no one can even tell there's no eggs. Idk anything about its effect on bc though
