Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
dumb question: can i make my own sometimes and use jarred sometimes. or does the baby need to be adjusted to one or the other? is there a chance of stomach upset if i mix it up a little. it seems so easy and tasty to make your own!!!!!

Not crazy at all. All you really need is a food processor and you're in business!

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
I definitely plan on giving it a try. If it becomes too much and I feel I am spending too much time doing it I'll stop, but as of now, I plan to make my own baby food!!

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
I tried it with my first and eventually gave up. I simply didn't have enough time in my daily routine for it. I gave it a good attempt, that's the best you can do, try.
Someone asked if they could use both "homemade" and jar food...YES, your baby will have preferences as to what food [pears, apples, peaches] s/he likes, not how it's made. It is possible that you find s/he likes the jar pears better but the homemade carrots more...but their tummy won't need to have only one.

No - DH and I talk about wanting to do that all the time - we are vegan, and will probably need to because Cailen will be raised vegetarian until he chooses to eat meat on his own....
ETA - I ust bookmarked this thread so I can refer to these recipes and FM some of the BTDT moms!

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
Not PG yet, but think it's a great idea!! It seems so easy, especially if you can make it ahead of time and freeze it. For me it would be easier to do this then to drive all the way to the grocery store and buy it

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
I've been making DD food since the day she started eating it. It's ridiculously simple. I don't think it's crazy at all. I have only given her jarred organic fruits a few times because even applesauce takes all of ten minutes to make. And I work fulltime, so it's not like I have gobs of extra time.

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
I really want to do it.
I bought Annabel Karmel's book on making baby food from Barnes and Nobles a few weeks ago - the recipes are simple and actually seem pretty tasty!

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
they have a hand crank baby grinder--(I take this when we eat out) and a electric one for home. I have tons of recipes for juices--teething biscuits and general food recipes, as well as jarring fruits for when antyone is interested in swapping. Also.....a killer******homemade granola recipe for older kiddies. I am excited to make my own baby food again...sad I know..but I love cooking!

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
i am definitely doing it!! my good friend makes everything, she even made her own rice cereal when her ds was very young.
she suggested ruth yaron's book, super baby food. she said the book is very comprehensive.

you can definitely do both...I only gave the twins my baby food but when they were at their grandparents she preferred to use jarred baby food...
sometimes the jarred is easier if you are going to be out for awhile, on a trip, etc....

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
Not crazy, just perhaps optimistic about your energy level. Go for it, but don't be hard on yourself if once you have your baby you'd prefer to lie on the couch during those 10 minutes of free time!

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
I make all my own baby food - veggies, fruit, meat, etc. It's SO easy and is way more appealing than the jarred stuff!
And this is a great book...
Here's a good site...

I plan to do this as well.
When I lived in Spain, nobody used jared food - it seems so easy to make your own, and DEFINITELY more healthy!! Who needs all those additives and preservatives?? Yuk!!

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
so easy to do. I did it for DS and like everyone said - you can do so much at once that it probably takes less time than running to the store, loading up the japs and standing on the check out line.
I actually didn't even use the ice cube trays - I just got the snack sized ziplocks and put some in there and into a bigger freezer bag and stuffed it into the freezer.
I do agree though - nothing wrong with popping open a jar here and there. Except applesauce - get the motts natural one - much better price...

Re: Am I crazy for considering making my own babyfood?
I made 50% of my son's baby food....he hated the jarred vegetables and meats, and I couldn't stand the smell of them. I used boxed cereals though and jarred fruits...they were so much easier, but as far as meats and veggies, I just took what we were eating for dinner that night and put it through one of those mini food processors for him. The only real additional time it took was cleaning up the mini food processor.
