I'm in the minority because I allow sweets in moderation. I mean after lunch, one oreo isn't going to do any harm. Plus that the things that you are not allowed to have are even more appealing when they are not ever offered. As long as meals are balanced and healthy, in our house, a sweet or a cake or some ice cream for dessert is ok. Everything in moderation is the best approach IMO as opposed to totally not allowing something as harmless as a cookie or two.

My son is only 6 weeks old, but I think I will allow him sweets when the time comes. I have cousins (and have seen others) that were not allowed to have any sweets. Once they were older and the parents couldn't really control it as well, they went nuts with the sweets.

Anna - that's a great point about once they're in school it's a total different story. But when I answered, I'm speaking more of the here and now - not when she is in school in a couple of years. I hope in preschool she still eats the good snacks Chat Icon

I personally think in toddlerhood, it is easier to eat a heathier diet, especially if they are home.

I don't allow aly any cookies or cake or anything. She's fine with fruit or the occasional Gerber treats

This will be the same here. MOF I don't keep it in the house.

I didn't either, my DS was on a completely natural, organically grown only diet. Until I got divorced, now he eats all this garbage because that is what they feed him when he is with his father and his girlfriend (they live together and she has a 4yo son) all they give him is mac-n-cheese and capri-sun. Cookies and snack cakes, ice cream, ice pops, burgers and cereal loaded with sugar. It's disgusting and I absolutely hate it.

I don't eat that way and always wanted something better for my kids. Now they went and threw a wrench in my bucket and that is all he asks for.

I still only buy all natural stuff though. So when he is with me I only give him 100% unsweetend apple juice, sugar-free ice pops (made from real fruit), and organic milk, eggs, cheese etc.

I dont beleive in sheltering her from snacks and treats. Everything is in moderation. She has cookies and ice cream at times for a snack or dessert, and I will give her a lollypop, m&ms or smarties at times. The thing is while she likes candy she will equally choose and eat her healthy snacks as well. For us this approach seems better so 'treats' dont become something she craves and trys to sneak.

Last Christmas my cousin was visiting with her 3 year old, and she was going on and on about how he never eats candy and sweets and how good he was ect..... 1/2 hour later we found him devoring a whole bag of m&ms thats were somewhat out of reach, like he was an addict or something. The other kids around could have cared less about the m&ms since it was no big deal to them.

I may seem like a bad mommy but Jenna has her fair share of sweets and even McDonalds once in awhile-but she'll rather have the apple dippers than french fries and like I said-it's like once a month-if that.
She has had cupcakes, cookies, munchkins at gtg's and parties but at home her snacks are yogurt, fresh fruit and cheese. She actually has never had candy though like M&M's or even a lollipop although they aren't forbidden to me.
Everything in moderation is my motto.

Not a bad mommy at all. I have the same approach and see nothing wrong with it. Chat Icon

Believe it or not he doesn't want any of it yetChat Icon ...I know, that will change!

He really only has the arrow cookies and fig newtons. I've offered him ice cream and he usually doesn't want it. He also has no desire for juice! He only wants his water....

I totally believe in anything in moderation. I do feel if they are not allowed to have something they only want it more......I've seen this with my newphewChat Icon

I try so hard to give my two decent food at home, and my 3 y/o recently started preschool has been coming home with lolipops almost daily! Now, I am not a no sugar at all person, but we don't even keep that stuff in the house, so of course it is like gold to her. Now picture this, me, the largest mom at the open house surrounded by all the size 5 moms, and I am the one questioning the sweets!

That was rude of her to do that. I think that it is very comendable that you don't over do it with sugary treats. Good for you!
