Amityville school targets 2nd graders "N-word" T-shirt

Jaiden Haber, 8, with her mother, Karen Haber, at their home in Amityville. Jaiden is wearing the shirt she was wearing when she was asked by the school to change. (Newsday Photo / Paul J. Bereswill / June 25, 2008)

Second-grader Jaiden Haber was sent to the principal's office -- not for bad behavior, but for her T-shirt's slogan.

Last week, the principal told Jaiden, 8, to change her shirt, which read, "N the 'N' Word" and "It's time!"

Jaiden's mother, Karen, 45, said teachers at Northwest Elementary in Amityville should have "seized the moment" to discuss the shirt because it aimed to encourage tolerance.

But district superintendent John Williams said the word's inflammatory effect outweighed the shirt's potential educational value. He said Amityville schools strive to regularly instill cultural lessons.

"To send a little white girl wearing this shirt into a very diverse district that is almost 90 percent nonwhite was not the way to address this word," he said yesterday. "It's a lightning rod."

A gym teacher noticed Jaiden's shirt and sent her to the principal, who asked her to change into a school shirt because hers was a "distraction," Williams said.

That violated Jaiden's First Amendment rights, said Tara Keenan-Thomson, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union's Nassau chapter. "All students have the right to wear what they want, and this does not stop at the school gates, regardless of content or how old she is," she said.

Karen Haber said she received some of the shirts from Intrigue Concepts Inc., of Roosevelt, as payment for work done. She distributed 17 of them during Jaiden's birthday party in school a month ago.

"I never expected it to be blown up like this," Haber said. "But innocently enough, Jaiden's made an impact on society -- maybe even history."

Jaiden said she didn't understand the statement she was making with her shirt. "My mom picked it out," she said. "She thought it would look nice on me. I don't know why they made me take it off."

Karen Haber said she should have explained the shirt to her daughter, but wanted to "keep her innocent.

"Some parents criticize me for putting it on her since she's so young," Haber said. "But when I hear a 5-year-old tossing around that word, I know I would stick it on Jaiden, even if she were a newborn baby."

One parent said cultural awareness should begin early. "Racial issues are still sensitive, but there needs to be a dialogue," said Angela Roberts, 27, who was picking up her nieces from Northwest Elementary yesterday. "The school might have felt unprepared to deal with something like this. But it's a reality."

Another parent said racial education should be saved for high school. "You need to start somewhere and sometime," said Elizabeth Jex, 29, "but does it have to start with an 8-year-old girl?"

I wanted to post about this when I saw it this morning in the paper.
I have a question- maybe I am dumb- but I don't get the shirt.
What does "N the N word mean?"
Does that mean End the N word?

I think it is tasteless that the mother put that shirt on that girl. The girl herself said she did not know what the shirt said. Her mother thought it would "look nice"...

I love how the mother wanted to keep her daughter "innocent" by not discussing the shirt with her own child, but was willing to subject the 400 other students of the school to that same message... unacceptable

Jaiden said she didn't understand the statement she was making with her shirt. "My mom picked it out," she said. "She thought it would look nice on me. I don't know why they made me take it off."

This sentence speaks volumes.

I think the mother's heart was in the right place but the girl herself had no idea what the shirt meant.

I don't think the mother's heart was in the right place. From what I am hearing, she was threatening to sue the district the moment it happened. SUPPOSEDLY a lawsuit comment was thrown around rather quickly

Re: Amityville school targets 2nd graders "N-word" T-shirt

I think your right, it means End the N word..

I just don't understand why a mother would send their child to school like this..

.. thats a very powerful statement..and although I agree with it.. she is a little kid and doesn't even know what it means..

It seems to me like this mother is just trying to start drama. She even said she passed them out to her daughters friends..

If my DS came home from a friends house with a shirt like that.. I would be be a little put off.. Who passes that out to little kids?

If you want to make a statement.. make it on your own body.. not your daughter's who doesn't even understand

That's what I thought, but it didn't translate clearly. Good message, not school appropriate.

lol, the shirt is a mess IMO.. It was a free handout (or payment) to the mother. The mother, in my opinion, turned around and used her daughter as a billboard. It's sad. Now this poor girl is the center of a mini scandal in her hometown

whoops.. I should clarify. My family is in Amityville.. I've been waiting for this mess to hit the fan.

There are a lot of other factors that I am wondering if/when they will surface

This mother handed out these shirts as a gift at her daughters party... The other parent's were not happy with the distribution. They too thought it was in poor taste for such small children. However, the mother is trying to say that she has the "community's support" in this fight..

News12 and newsday has also been filming at the school and trying to interview small children. This was squashed since they didnt have any consent to put any children on tv or in the paper..

it has been a total mess

.

I AGREE 100%!

If the mother wanted to make some sort of statement she should have ordered the shirt in HER size and wore it. Don't put something like that on your child!

It did say that in the paper. I thought it really a strange goddie bag gift.

I think it is a disgrace that any mother would get her daughter (at 8 years old) to wear that shirt.

DH had a girl in his third grade class this year wear something very similar and he brought it to the principals attention. She was asked to turn her shirt inside out. Nothing happened afterwards.

I saw this on newsday online last night and it really bothered me! First of all, I didn't get the saying at first either - lol. Seriously though, really poor thinking on mother's part - not appropriate for school AND do not send your young, innocent daughter to spread your message when she doesn't even know what's going on. Right? I mean since when is "N" and abbreviation for "End"?
It really makes no sense- grammatically - at all.

That mother is a freakin' jacka$$.

The kid doesn't even know what the shirt meant. If the mother wanted to make a statement, she should wear the damm shirt herself.

Idiot.

Jaiden's mother, Karen, 45, said teachers at Northwest Elementary in Amityville should have "seized the moment" to discuss the shirt because it aimed to encourage tolerance.

I'm sorry but as a teacher I feel a little offended by this. Where does she suppose during the day a teacher is supposed to find time to discuss this? I mean a potentially heated discussion, doubtfully at the elementary age tho. Like a teacher doesn't have many other things planned during the day to teach than to discuss whats on this girls shirt. its bad enough that there's little room for us to teach how we want with admin up our butts to follow a certain curriculum.

How dare she expect teachers to randomly teach kids tolerance by having her kid walk into school with that shirt. How about you hand me a lesson plan with that shirt and I'll see if i can fit it into my schedule.

While i do think the message is an important one, it was poorly executed. JMO
