Jaiden's mother, Karen, 45, said teachers at Northwest Elementary in Amityville should have "seized the moment" to discuss the shirt because it aimed to encourage tolerance.

I'm sorry but as a teacher I feel a little offended by this. Where does she suppose during the day a teacher is supposed to find time to discuss this? I mean a potentially heated discussion, doubtfully at the elementary age tho. Like a teacher doesn't have many other things planned during the day to teach than to discuss whats on this girls shirt. its bad enough that there's little room for us to teach how we want with admin up our butts to follow a certain curriculum.

How dare she expect teachers to randomly teach kids tolerance by having her kid walk into school with that shirt. How about you hand me a lesson plan with that shirt and I'll see if i can fit it into my schedule.

While i do think the message is an important one, it was poorly executed. JMO

I'm not a teacher but I can empathize and agree 100%. It was a poorly thought -out idea on the mother's part. No one is against the message, which obviously she]'s latching onto as her crusade but the presentation of it is ridiculous and did more damage than good IMO. The mother has some idea that her daughter is changing history as a result - delusional.

I completely agree. There are definitely ways to teach 8 year olds about tolerance, but using a poorly written slogan on a t-shirt is not the way to do it, and neither is potentially introducing the n-word into their vocabularies.

I read the article in the paper earlier, and I think this mother is more ignorant than the ignorance she is trying she is trying to fight against. What she did is completely inappropriate. The sentiment may have been okay, but using your innocent child as a billboard for your cause is just wrong, particularly when the shirt makes NO obvious sense and the child is too young to understand what she is promoting. I could go on and on about the number of things that were wrong about this whole situation. Chat Icon

That mother is a freakin' jacka$$.

The kid doesn't even know what the shirt meant. If the mother wanted to make a statement, she should wear the damm shirt herself.

Idiot.

She gave them away at her daughter's birthday party. I feel like she was using these kids for her own agenda (especially because she didn't teach them what the shirt meant) and that is not right. She used those kids as human billboards.

I think it is tasteless that the mother put that shirt on that girl. The girl herself said she did not know what the shirt said. Her mother thought it would "look nice"...

I love how the mother wanted to keep her daughter "innocent" by not discussing the shirt with her own child, but was willing to subject the 400 other students of the school to that same message... unacceptable

ITA.

WTH is wrong with that mother? You send your daughter, wearing that message which is NOT clear at all - what the heck does that EVEN MEAN?! is "N" supposed to mean "END" the N word?? See, it is sad because not even the mother can effectively explain HOW that shirt is a good thing and WHAT the message is supposed to say/mean. Then, the daughter gets sent to school wearing it clueless as to what the heck it means?! Chat Icon

I completely agree w/ the school's decision - the school is not a place to start up anything like that - it is inappropriate and the kids are very young. Also - I LOVE how she had the bottom part "It's time" added -- when I saw this story on News12 the other day with the shirt she wore to school it was JUST "N the N Word" with nothing below it in pink. She is just doing this to stir up stuff and I don't know why.
