Re: An opinion question about kids with speech delays....
as a child, I had a speech delay - i had articulation problems because I had a lisp - back then- it was not picked up until around 4th grade - and because I was pulled for services at the same time as the advanced math program - i could only do speech - i begged to get taken out of speech and never took it seriously - one regret i have but i was a kid
doing things ealier is easier - kids follow the program and don't miss out on other things and keeps other kids from making fun of them - i will defienlty be proactive with my son's speech

Re: An opinion question about kids with speech delays....
Well, Nina receives services for a speech delay. She understood most of everything but she just could not express herself. The ped. thought it wasn't a big deal and that we should just give her time. As her mother, I saw a little girl struggling every single day, all day long, trying to be understood. She was so frustrated and would act out inappropriately. She was starting to bang her head against the floor and walls when she was mad and I couldn't figure out what she wanted. To me, I don't think waiting it out and allowing her to find herself, was an option. I don't think that giving her time, in her case, would have been more harmful.

Re: An opinion question about kids with speech delays....
I think we do expect too much sometimes.
I have a son who gets EI services, including speech, and this is something I struggle with daily. DH and I ask each other all the time, "how much of this behavior (or lack thereof) related to his delay and how much of it is something to expect from a 2 year old?" In the end, it doesn't matter I guess, because he needs the services, gets them and is improving.
It's funny, though, that as parents, I think we all learn a certain "language" now that the services are more available and parents are more in tune with preschool development. We were at the pool yesterday and there was this really cute boy following me around the kiddie pool because he wanted to play with us. At one point he was literally under my feet, so his dad reprimanded him. I said it was OK, that he was just being friendly and the dad told me that he has a problem with boundaries. On the one hand, I thought it was great that the dad was so in tune with his son, but on the other hand, it made me because I could never in a million years imagine my own dad saying that 30 years ago.

I think that as a population, we're more informed these days, not to mention the services are provided so I honestly have to choose other. I don't think that we expect too much of kids and I don't think there are more kids with speech delays, I think we just know more and know better now. Just like with diagnosing autism. I don't think there are necessarily MORE kids with autism these days, I just think that there is better diagnosis for kids who might have previously been labeled with some other disorder. I mean, kids have to qualify for services and for as many kids that we know of that have delays and get those services, there are tons of other kids who were evaluated and did not receive services. Does that make sense? I'm tired and sleep deprived so I never know
ITA. Thanks for typing out my thoughts
