any speech therapists here? I have a question about stutter in kids please
My nephew who is 3 started to stutter about a month ago. His parents took him to a neurologist and he says it will go away , but it seems that the stutter only got worse. I just wanted to see if anyone has any experience in this . Does it really go away ? Should they wait and see or is there anything they should do? (Just a note they are overseas so they have a different system when it comes to evaluating kids and so on).
Thanks in advance

I'm not a speech therapist.. but my son was about the same age when he started to stutter sometimes... It was like his mind was going faster than his mouth could spit out the words...We didn't make a big deal of it and just listened and waited for him to finish his sentences and eventually it went away.

Same thing happened with my niece.

Re: any speech therapists here? I have a question about stutter in kids please
im a speech therapist... i would have to hear how his stuttering is to be really sure. BUT, for the most part, at his age, i would agree with the doctor. at 3, he is still learning language and how to use it and put words together. this can slow things down a little bit. like somebody else said, his brain is working faster than his mouth is some things to look for are if hes doing things like flinching while hes in a stutter ( like a head tick or eyes blinking), if hes avoiding talking because of it... those could be signs of a more serious stutter. BUT, for the most part, stuttering at his age is somewhat "normal" and part of developing language

Speech therapist as well. I agree with the previous 2 posters.
Until the age of 4/5, disfluencies in speech is a part of speech and language development. However, if the disfluencies are causing the child frustration and affecting him negatively (e.g. does he avoid talking) than it might warrant an assessment.
Tell the family to NOT draw attention to it- especially by telling the child to "slow down" or trying to finish his sentences. Doing that is counterproductive and can exacerbate the problem.

Another SLP here... I agree with the other posters. Just don't draw attention to it and it will probably go away.

And my nephew. No stutter now, just when he was that age.

Another SLP here, and I agree with this too. Disfluencies are typical for children learning language.

Re: any speech therapists here? I have a question about stutter in kids please
Thank you so very much everyone. I told my sister so they are going to try and ignore the stutter(which is very hard for my BIL and he keeps correcting my nephew ) but he is going to try too. So I guess we'll see . Hopefully it'll stop .My nephew is a very sensitive and very, very smart kid( very advanced for his age) so that maybe one of the reasons why he started to stutter. THANKS AGAIN
