I think that's one of the most wonderful things I've read.

WOW! How amazing!
I'd be a surrogate in a heartbeat if I didn't have miserable pregnancies!
I can't imagine why anyone would think it was weird!

What an amazing story!
But, I have a technical question:
So, there are 3 babies, right? And it said that 2 of them are identical twins. Which leads me to believe that 2 embryos were implanted, and one of those embryos just happened to split.
So, does that make the other baby a fraternal twin, or technically a singleton? But can she be a singleton if she shared the womb with two other babies? Is she considered a triplet? Or is she considered a twin?
Did I make you dizzy?
They are considered triplets as three babies grew in the womb at the same time. A singleton is when one baby grows in the womb and is born.
That being said, two can be identical (one embryo splitting).
The third is considered fraternal.
Again, they are all considered triplets, no singletons, no twins.
HTH
Yup. My BFF is a triplet. She and her sister are identical twins and their brother is their fraternal brother.

I hate to be the debbie downer but that's creepy to me. I think it's an amazing gift to give somebody, but I would be to creeped out to do it or have it done for me.
i'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way!!! esp if it was my MOM giving birth to my children... no way no how & THAT is the creepiest of it all!!!

It is very odd but God bless them
Both my sister and my aunt offered to be a surrogate for DH and I! You never know...when the one thing you want to be is a parent sometimes you will go to extremes to make it happen.

I would do it for my sister in a second - and I'd be ok w/ her doing it for me. -
But I could not 'let' my mother do that - I would feel too selfish and be too worried that God forbid something would happen to my Mom as a result of the pregnancy - It's not 'easy' to carry a pregnancy at 50+ years old ........

I hope neither of you ever have trouble conceiving.
At some point you are forced to look at all sorts of options. Creepy or not.

for me, its not an option... granted i'm not in that situation - but i dont think i would ever turn to doing something like that
IMO too confusing for the child when they get older... bio mom also = aunt just not my cup of tea... i would look into all other options instead & if none of them worked, then i would adopt

I have to agree with Lauren. Being on the side of the fence where it was NOT easy to conceive, you get to a point where you start to consider other options just to be able to have your own biological child.
In my situation, I went to lengths I always said I would NEVER do to have a baby. Granted, IVF is not the same as going the surrogate route, but for me, it was HUGE as I was DEADSET against any invasive means to have a baby. When it came time to make a decision, it was easy.. I didn't even think twice about it in the end.
Point is..never say never... you really don't know how far you would go to have something you so desparately want.

Ain't that the truth...I always said when I was young - "I'll never do any invasive procedures to get PG, if it happens it happens and if not, then so be it." Now, I've gone through three fresh IVF cycles, 12 frozen transfers and hospitilization twice. Things change and sometimes someone will make an offer that can't be refused.
And for this woman and her mother, maybe she didn't have a sister so she couldn't go that route. Maybe her mom was her only option. And I still think it was an amazing thing for her mother to do.

What's confusing?
The biological mother is still the daughter and her DH. It's just that her mom carried the pregnancy b/c her daughter couldn't.

I was wondering what was confusing as well Daughter's eggs + her husband's sperm = biological parents regardless of who carries them

yeah my bad - i thought it was the 56 year old mother's eggs & DHs sperm & then she was just giving the child to her daughter
makes it a little better.. but still a little creepy to me IMO

I don't see WHAT is creepy about this. I guess the above posters have not had trouble getting or KEEPING a pregnancy. This was offered to me by my best friend and sister and had I needed to I am sure I would have taken them up on it.

I would do it for a family member or very close friend.
I think it is an amazing, wonderful and selfless gift and I find nothing creepy about it at all.

I think its beautiful and not creepy at all. Its not as if its the mom's egg. She was "just the oven". I think I would have far more peace of mind having a family member carry the baby rather than a stranger surrogate who, well- you never know.
I would do this for my DD without a doubt.

As much as it's a nice deed she did for her daughter, I totally find it disturbing.. I couldn't imagine my own mother carrying my children.. my sister yes, but not my mother.
why is that disturbing? That is a very wierd choice of words, IMHO
I don't get it. I think it is an AMAZING gift

I don't understand the choice of the word disturbing either. Why is disturbing or creepy?

Re: and now for something completely different: 56 yr old grandma gives birth to own grandchildren
if it wasn't for my mother's age, I wouldn't see anything strange about having my mother be my surogate. In fact I think it's better than my sister because your mother is your parent and will be an extended parent of your child. so it's not as strange to me as an aunt who is young and having her own family KWIM?

Cant people exccept that for some people this wouldn't be an option?
It would be for me- but I don't begrudge anyone for thinking it's weird. People have different thoughts, feelings and opinions...I'm wondering when some people on LIF are going to start accepting that and not being so defensive about everything...

I agree we all have different relationships with our parents, different perspectives and experiences. I think it is a wonderful gift the Mother gave her daughter, but I can also see why people would be uncomfortable with it; to each her own.

Saying "I personally wouldn't do this" is a LOT different than saying "that is creepy or weird."
