Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
Cookies. It was cookies. I had made them a dozen times before. Maybe even a baker's dozen. Either way, the mistake was one that caused total regression in the culinary community. I lost all respect from those whose allegience in the kitchen was hard earned. I had switched baking powder and baking soda. Never again.

DH and I tried to make a roasted chicken, but didn't put it on a roasting rack. It sat in it's fat and didn't cook on the bottom. It looked terrible.
We haven't tried roasted chicken since.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
I made a vodka sauce, but the recipe was confusing and never said how long to cook the sauce after adding the vodka. I ended up not tasting the sauce before pouring it over the pasta. I didn't cook the sauce long enough, and it tasted like vodka. It tasted pretty good otherwise so I ate a bit of it (didn't want to admit I completely screwed up the recipe), and got a little buzzed.

I'm not quite sure how, but I once screwed up instant mashed potatoes I think I mixed up the amounts for the milk and the flakes but there was no salvaging them.

well my first attempt at meatloaf went horribly wrong. Way too much liquid (sauce) and we now refer to it as moosh meat or moosh loaf It was nasty!

I seem to always mess up homemade mashed potatoes. They always come out too runny or too creamy.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
This was a while ago and really my only major flop. When my bro and I were younger (13ish) we were making cupcakes together. Well, we mixed up the water and oil and instead of 1/2c of water we put 1/2 cup of oil and only 1/4 water. Needless to say they were gross and discarded!! We gave mom a good laugh!!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
Pumpkin Muffins.
I made the muffins and the recipe called for Egg Whites so since the only term I knew of Egg Whites were hard boiled, so I cooked the egg whites first then threw them in the mix.
They came out w/ white lumpy chunks and knew something was wrong. I had called my mom down and explained and asked "what did I do wrong"?.
I think she almost peed herself. I just never associated egg white liquid as "egg white". And yes, mommy loves to tell people this story.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
Me and DH were making a gingerbread house. Dh was unfamiliar with baking terms, and while making the icing, he used a cup of water instead of 1 tablespoon. He was so upset, but we found a recipe for icing online and it came out ok

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
It's a toss up between chicken picata which was just awful and beyond description...
or it was the brisket. I have a delicious brisket recipe that DH always begs me to make. He does the grocery shopping and usually he will pick up a beef brisket but this one time he picked up corned beef brisket.
He said he thought I could make it the same way as a regular beef brisket, so fool that I am I listend to him. My brisket doesn't call for water - it's simple, stewed tomatoes, carrots, some other stuff, it's really good. Corn beef brisket needs to be cooked in water (I know this now) because of the 400000 tons of salt in it. One bite and it felt like we were completely dehydrated.

Don't feel bad - I have messed up mac and cheese from the box! (Which for the record, I NEVER eat... but I was making it for DH!)! I think I added too much milk or something...

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
What a fun thread!!
I cannot think of mu flop yet, but I remember when my youth group was together making cranberry bread for the elderly, this guy in my group, his mom told him to grease the pan...
so he melted butter and poured it in to "grease" it...it was hysterical!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
When I was in high school I tried to make mac & cheese and I didn't know you had to boil the water before putting in the macaroni. I don't remember the actual outcome. But, my mom still to this day jokes around with me about boiling the water first. In fact, at my bridal shower she had people write out recipe cards and my aunt wrote one out about "how to boil water"!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
Grilled Cheese. Yes, Grilled Cheese.
I set myself up for this one too. My roommates in college swore I made the best grilled cheese ever (I still can't tell the difference b/t mine and anyone elses, but they were convinced I wasn't telling them the "secret"!??!)
My DH had heard all about this weird talent for years, but had never had my grilled cheese - until we first bought our house. So he says, I'm going to get the cheese and the bread and you have to make the grilled cheese.
Long story, short...well, I burnt it - BAD. So bad that there are still bread marks in the frying pan. I wasn't used to using an electric stove, and didn't realize how hot the burners would get so quickly. I will never hear the end of it.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
Mac N Cheese...didn't know I had to drain the macaroni before I added the cheese mix!!
Chicken Cutlets...didn't know I didn't have to pound them till they were paper thin. After I fried them, they were so thin, they turned crunchy. We called them Chicken Chips.
French Toast...didn't know I wasn't supposed to DRENCH the bread in milk. It was a gloppy mess!
Tacos...forgot to add the water after I put in the Taco flavor mix. That meat was SSAAALLLTTTYYYY!!!
Should I go on...
