BUMPING because it's been 2 years and I'm sure there's a TON of new flops to share!
My favorite is Trey's pumpkin muffins with the hard-boiled eggs.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
chili! I can't make good chili. The first time I tried the recipe called for cumin and I have cumin in my little spice rack from BBB but it came in little ball form. I had no idea that cumin was supposed to be a powder so I put in 1 tsp of the balls. While eating my chili I bit into little balls of cumin and it was nasty. I had to throw out the whole dish. Last night I made chili with the mccormick's mix and it still wasn't good! I'm forever destined to make terrible chili. I think I give up.
ets: It might have been coriander, not cumin. I try to block out the whole experience.

Worst Cooking Flop:
I got on this big cannellini (sp?) bean kick, and made something with pasta, broccoli, cauliflower, chicken stock....it was AWFUL. and there was so much of it! Luckily I lived alone. I tried to cover it in cheese and still eat it but no. In the trash it went!
Worst Baking flop:
Butterscotch oatmeal cookies--I bought the butterscotch chips and left them in the car--they melted, so I put them in the fridge to try to re-form them. I broke them up and still used them. It seemed ok, but when I baked them it turned into basically a brittle covering the entire cookie sheet!! Still tasted good but what a disgrace!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
I tried to make country fried steak. It was just a creamy, gooey, mushy mess - so nasty and I was so sad bc before i put the sauce on it the fried steak was SO yummy! I threw out like $50 worth of steak that night and we ate all sides.
I did a summer semester in Italy and promised all of my roommates that I would cook for them. For an easy side I decided to use the rice in a bag. I read the directions wrong and boiled the water FIRST and then put the rice in. It was horrible hard chewy rice but everyone ate it anyway bc it was Sunday and nothing was open!

This was a while ago and really my only major flop. When my bro and I were younger (13ish) we were making cupcakes together. Well, we mixed up the water and oil and instead of 1/2c of water we put 1/2 cup of oil and only 1/4 water. Needless to say they were gross and discarded!! We gave mom a good laugh!!
OMG I did the same thing. While DH and I were dating, I made him a birthday cake. Well, I mixed up the amounts of the water and the oil. It came out look awesome. I let it cool off before I put the frosting on and when I came back, it shriveled down to nothing. LOL
DH was a trooper though and ate a piece. He didn't want to make me feel any worse.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
I've only had a few flops. 2 were in the last month tho
Chicken Fried Steak--didn't think to pund out the meat, the gravy tasted burnt and the coating was chewy. My FH and dad ate it anyways (but they will eat anything).
Some horrific skillet casserole with tomatoes, broccoli, chicken and cream of mushroom soup
Pecan crusted Fried Chicken--My mom spent $$ on all the ingredients for me and I didn't think to fry the chicken just for color and then bake it in the oven. Blackened and burnt pecan crusted chicken...Bleeeccchhh!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
I am a teacher and I bake something each year with the students in small groups. One year when we made pumpkin bread I had all the ingredients in tupperware containers but I didn't label them. After we baked the bread and tasted it I realized that I mistook sugar for salt. It tasted horrible but the kids learned a valuable lesson on how important each ingredient is. Plus that was years ago and they still talk about it and laugh. Botched bread=good memory!

Pumpkin Muffins.
I made the muffins and the recipe called for Egg Whites so since the only term I knew of Egg Whites were hard boiled, so I cooked the egg whites first then threw them in the mix.
They came out w/ white lumpy chunks and knew something was wrong. I had called my mom down and explained and asked "what did I do wrong"?.
I think she almost peed herself. I just never associated egg white liquid as "egg white". And yes, mommy loves to tell people this story.
(I was new to the baking and cooking world)
Thanks for the needed laugh!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
My grandmother used to make AWESOME rice pudding. She has since past and I called my sister one day for the recipe. As I was writing it down instead of writing 1/2 tsp salt I wrote .5 I remember thinking to myself, I should really change that so I don't think I meant 5 tsp. Well when I went to make the recipe, you guessed it, I put 5 tsp salt. It tasted horrible!!!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
Oh and to add one more, not me but my Dad. My Mom took us out one night when we were kids and left baked ziti on the stove for my dad. She wrote a note that said he should heat it. Well he heated it on TOP of the stove (like with the gas flame). The thing exploded all over my Moms new kitchen that had white tiles and wallpaper.

The first time I made potato salad, I didn't boil the potatoes long enough, and they were still completey hard. I had to throw the whole thing out.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
This was many years ago, and I made this for an ex. So I'm not too broken up that they didn't turn out ok.
Bisquick makes this pancake mix where you add water to the container w/ pancake mix already in it, shake, pour and flip the pancakes when they're done on one side.
Well, I added the water, poured & flipped. The looked done....when he bit into them, all the dried flour spilled onto his plate.
Got me out of cooking breakfast though.

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
I burned garlic when sauteeing it for a tomato sauce.. I scraped out the black bits.. but didn't bother to change the olive oil and proceeded with my sauce as planned. The whole pot reeked of burned garlic and tasted AWFUL.
When I was in college I decided to make a 'fancy' dinner for my then boyfriend at his apartment. I chose "steak au poivre". I followed the recipe - but decided to give it a signature of my own - so I used red pepper. A LOT of red pepper. We are talking a mixture of ground cayenne and red pepper flakes seared onto the steak with the normal black pepper.
My boyfriend was great. He tried SO hard to keep his face relatively straight... but he was turning red and sweating and kept going for his water. Then I took a bite of my steak and almost fell over. I NEVER serve food without tasting it first because of that!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
I attempted to make Apple Strudel since it was my boyfriends favorite dessert, I bought the apples and frozen phyllo dough. I defrosted the dough, put the apples with the brown sugar and all in a straight line accross and put it to bake- I didn't realize the dough needed to be stretched out with a roller to make it thin! I brought half of the strudel to my boyfriends sisters house and everyone helped themselves to a piece which is when I realized the dough on the inside was still raw, I wanted to die!!! Now they know better than to trust my baking skills (or lack of)

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
the first dinner I ever made for DH was a chicken dish. It was almost inedible. DH ate it anyway and complimented me but boy did that suck. I took some chicken breasts, some lemon and some lemon pepper and put it in the oven. YUCK!
He will remember that dish forever. Good thing I learned how to cook.
Most recently I made mashed potatoes and they came out like glue! I still don't know why.

Lemon Chicken. I once tried to make my mom's recepie healthier. Bad idea. It was terrible...
Brisket. I overcooked it a LOT. It was so tough... I thought DH was going to need a chainsaw to eat dinner.

When I was dating DH, he wanted a mac and cheese type dish with chicken..so I find a casserole recipe and neglect to read the part where you have to let it sit over night...it was such a gross, soupy thing but he ate it!

Re: And then something went tragically wrong....
My DH and I went on a cruise and had this chilled pear and blueberry soup. I really wanted to make it but instead of it coming out smooth and creamy, it was lumpy and tasted gross.
Oh and the hard boiled egg pumpkin bread story made me laugh so hard that I cried. Thanks, I needed that.

Mango Chutney for pork roast. Dijon seed mustard DOES NOT belong in that recipe.
