And tips for giving meds to cats?

I have to give my cat 3 doses of liquid medicine a day for the rest of her life. Any tips to make this a less painful process for her?

It's a struggle to get her to hold still to take the medicine and now she's starting to run away from me. Is there a trick to getting her to open her mouth so I can squirt the meds in? It's such a small amount (1 ml) but it's important.

I feel awful for her. Chat Icon

Thanks.

Aww I'm sorry! One of my cats is currently on medication for an ear infection, and it is really tough to give him the meds---especially since he is a 16 pounder! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

The best method DH and I have found for giving him medicine:

One person cradles him like a baby with one arm, but puts the other arm over his front paws and arms. I've really found those front arms and paws are the most powerful tool they have to get out of such a hold, so maybe sure you keep them down.

The other person gives the medicine.

Since you have to give the cat the medicine orally, can you mix it in her food?

It's been a while since I had to do this, but I remember not opening the cat's mouth.
I pulled down and out the lower lip to create a pocket to drop the liquid in.

Jen - I am going to try mixing the medicine with her food on Saturday morning. I am going to mix it with a tablespoon of food and see if she'll eat it all at once. I have to be sure she gets all of it at once since she has to get three doses a day. Thanks!

Susibee - I'll try pulling on her lip. I tried to get her to open her mouth from the jaw, maybe this will work better. (well, it can't go worse..LOL) I need to be able to do something I control. Thanks!!

Does the medication have a dropper?

I would fill the dropper and then play with him for a few mins and get him lay on his side.. open his lip and squirt it in, if he's being cooperative.. couple of times, I would hold, DH would open his mouth and squirt it in.. I have war wounds from that one week.. Chat Icon

Good luck!!!

Re: And tips for giving meds to cats?

I would also give the cat a small treat afterwards, for being a good cat.
This way the cat will associate getting medicine with getting a treat and will accept both hopefully willingly

My cat is addicted to her kitty crack and begs for it, so DH and I have to limit the amount she gets.

Re: And tips for giving meds to cats?

press gently on the corners of kitty's mouth and it will pop open.

we've had to swaddle them to prevent scratches (especially those hind claws Chat Icon ). it's a little silly, but it definitely works. our cats become very peaceful when all swaddled up. they run like mad after we let them go, but it gets the medicine in - and that's the most important thing.

It seems a third arm would come in very handy in trying to get a 1/4 teaspoon of liquid into this 10 pound cat. Who knew? Chat Icon

I am so concerned about causing more stress for her so I really appreciate all these suggestions. I will be trying all of them and let you know how it goes. Chat Icon

Take the dropper and insert it into the back side of the mouth and squeeze the medicine in.

Re: And tips for giving meds to cats?

Is it possible to get the medication in pill form? If you can it might be easier to just put it in a pill pocket or in her food.

I would do this too. Also reward her afterwards w/ a treat. tell her it is time for her medicine , give it to her and then the treat. It might take 2 people at first to control her . Also, you can look up videos on youtube on how to do this. I did this when I had to give my sisters cat asthma medicine, it helped alot. Good luck. Hope the kitty is okay.Chat Icon
