Animal fell into PVC fence post, can't get out! Who to call? **2nd UPDATE** He made it!

One of our PVC fence post caps broke and an animal fell down inside the hollow post! It can't get out on its own and can hear it scratching and sqealing!! I'm assuming its a squirrel but don't know for sure. Help! Who can I call? I'm in Nassau.

Put a rope down the post so he can climb out!

He needs to be able to pull himself out, the rope will help.

I'd call your town's animal control officer..Usually, at least here in CT the police non emergency number or fire non emergency can connect you too.

I was going to suggest securing the other end of the rope to something while the loose end is dangling down the post and leaving him alone for a little while. He may be scared to come out with a human on the other end.

How deep is it? I say a rope with many knots on it, so it can grab onto the knots. Secure the rope then leave for a while so it isn't afraid to try to climb out. Let us know, please!

you can actually call the police, DH goes to these calls all the time. But if you want them to save him they will probably cut the post so they can get him out. If its a big deal they will send ESU

A "mole?" fell into my window-well once...I put a long cardboard tube from a wrapping paper roll into the well and he climbed out...so I think if you put a rope or a long stick in there he may be able to get out!

Confirmed...it is a squirrel

I got some rope and tied off a knot every 4 inches for the first 7 ft. Then I tied off the other end of the rope to a nearby tree and dropped it down the inside of the post. I could see it sqirming around at the bottom so hopefully it will grab the rope and pull itself out. Only time will tell.

Who knows how long the little critter has been in there. This PVC post is near the corner of our property that we never really walk by, only when mowing the lawn.

OMG, you gotta help him.

What about lowering a blunt tree branch into the hole slowly so it can climb up it? Or buying some plastic or wire chicken wire and cutting a 7+ foot strip) to create kind of a ladder for it to climb up? This should work. Squirrels are good climbers if they have something to grab.

Also what about cutting up a blanket or a sheet and lowering it down, something it can dig it's claws into?

I am trying to t hink of other ways to help this poor guy. Sure squirrels can get annoying but I would still help it, that's so sad!
