**2nd update** Sorry for the delay
Ok well the rope didn't work. The little critter just didn't know what to do with it. So I placed a long piece of wood down to the bottom of the post and left it overnight. I check this morning and it was gone! 
Finally I covered the open post hole. Geez you can't make this crap up... gotta love being a homeowner.

Excellent!! Great idea! Believe it or not, I was worried about this poor guy last night. I kept checking late for updates, trying to think of ways to get him out.
I guess he grabbed onto the wood with his claws and clawed his way up! Yay!!!!!
Maybe he will repay the favor and tell all his friends to not dig up your lawn in the future!!!
