Dina...I truly respect your heartfelt defense of your opinions and while I may not agree with them, I can understand them and I do appreciate how you are supporting your viewpoints.
MissJones - thank you for starting a civil conversation about abortion and for being willing to listen to my viewpoint. It means a lot to me not to feel attacked on these boards for expressing a different POV. I used to be pro-choice (about 10 years ago) and understand & respect your POV as well

Re: Another abortion spin-off b/c hey...there just aren't enough!
Posted by maybebaby I think what a lot of pro-lifers seek is a reason to understand why we as a nation don't have more regard for unborn children. I know I seek that answer everyday but unfortunately I won't ever know. Not everyone shares my mentality, and that's ok, but it's nice to know others do.
I think this is probably the core of the pro-life vs pro choice platform (maybe I'm wrong) but pro lifers believe life begins at conception. To pro life people it's a life, a baby, something with rights while I would think a lot of pro choice people do not believe life begins at conception. Yes I know all pro choice people don't necessarily believe this because they themselves wouldn't have an abortion but they don't feel like they need to fight for the rights of an unborn "child". I think that made sense, not that it's any kind of answer, just the core of the debate IMO.

I agree. I believe that is the core of it as well.

How about mandatory sterilization of crackhead and welfare recipient moms.

I am pro-choice and pose to be devil's advocate to myself here...With the assumption that life begins at birth, which i believe in, when do you feel the life attains a soul? When a human life is first created, biologically is not unlike the form of other primitive microbiological life such a cell, algae, or even a fish. These life forms aren't considered to have a "soul". I guess I feel that abortion should not be an option after the fetus reaches the complexity of a being that can have a soul. Before that point, i am very pro choice. As for when a fetus reaches the soul stage, after gestational research that really is also personal opinion. Personal religious beliefs are also involved. In any event, I don't believe the government has the right to make my personal religious/spiritual decision.

ETA: the adoption laws need to change first in the US. I believe that is something that ALL of us can agree on.
Agreed! I think because the laws are the way they are, too many American children wind up living their lives in foster care. Many are minorities. I know this turns off DH and I, and we are considering adopting our second child.

What about the women that go into recovery? Do we sterilize men that don't fully support their child(ren)? Do we sterilize men that don't have any involvement other then financial in a child's life, from having any more? What is the poverty line to allow women to have children? Who are the "we" that are making such decisions?

For those who are Pro-Life...a question.
I think we can all basically agree that a baby never really asks to be born. Right?
So...when you have a baby that can't make that choice, is it fair for them to be brought into a world where their parents are crack-heads, their uncle is really their father, the only nutritious thing in the house to eat is a fruit roll up and they are bound to repeat a vicious cycle?
I know pro-life is about LIFE, but how is what I described above a LIFE???
because nobody is psychic and can predict the life that one may lead, no matter who their parents are. I think we can all basically agree that a baby never really asks to be killed, right? I mean even people living in the situation you describe above don't want to die, they continue to live their life. It may not be a life you consider worthy- but they keep living.
