another carseat/jacket question (re: convertible car seats)
Sorry if this has been asked a million times but I am confused. We are switching Talia to a convertible car seat soon. She is 7 mos. I have been putting a light jacket or sweater on her and using the kiddopotomus cover since I heard coats/jackets are not safe w/ the straps. But w/ a convertible car seat what do you do? Put a coat on and off when they get in/out of car?? That seems insane in this cold weather, I am always rushing to get her in as quick as possible. Just wondering what everyone does or if its ok to use a winter coat w/ a convertible car seat???

A thick winter coat, no, that is not ok to use. There are thinner coats that are ok
What I do is warm my car up, bring DS out, take everything off and strap him in, then do it all again when he gets out.
It is a PITA, but its safer

No coat in the car seat. I bring him out to the car, take off his coat and strap him in. Then I unstrap him and put the coat back on when we get home. I agree with Kate, PITA at first, but you get used to it and it just becomes part of the routine.

Re: another carseat/jacket question (re: convertible car seats)
My DD wears her coat in the carseat. It's not a heavy duty coat and her straps are secure and snug. It's not practical to keep taking her coat on and off especially when I am running from store to store and the only time I can warm-up my car in advance is if I am home or at someone's house. It's just entirely too cold out to be constantly taking her coat off and if it's raining out.........forget that!
Everyone has a differing opinion on it but in my case, DD wears her coat while strapped in.

This is what we do too. During the fall, DS had a thin fleece jacket that I kept on. Now that he's wearing a bulky coat, I take it on and off. It's definitely a PITA.
I can't remember which store has it, but I've seen posts about a very thin, but very warm fleece jacket that's good for the winter and can be worn in the carseat. I'll probably look into getting something like that next year.

I put a fleece that comes on the inside of the Chrildren's place coat on them with hat and gloves and I will wrap a blanket around them. I warm my car up prior.

Re: another carseat/jacket question (re: convertible car seats)
Some suggestions:
Keep blankets in the car, thin polar fleece jackets, car seat poncho, take coat off in car seat and put on backwards, some coats are a little too thick to have zippered up but will be OK if you zip it after you tighten the harness.
To do a test to see if your a jacket is acceptable for a car seat:
Put the child in the car seat with their coat on and tighten the straps.
WITHOUT loosening the straps, take your child out of the seat.
Remove the jacket and put child back in the seat.
The straps should be just as snug as with the coat as without the coat.
You should not be able to pinch the straps at the shoulder.

DD is still in her infant seat, so I put a polar fleece on her with layerd clothes underneath and keep a couple of blankets in the car too.
When she moves the convertible car seat, I'll get one of these:
baby polarfleece Convertible car seat cover

thanks everyone! I guess there are different opinions. Hopefully I will figure it out after trying it out a few times, first I need to get it installed.

No coats unless it's thin like a fleece.
