Now to answer your OP.

Good:
I can now say that I used to be terrified walking through WBurg & DUMBO - now, not at all. The n'bhds became a lot safer b/c of the boom of residents where it used to be completely industrial and absolutely delapitated.

QUOTE]

see, I agree that in and of itself, this IS a good thing.

but it would have been a GREAT thing for Brooklyn and the lifelong residents, if it didn't come at the cost of them not being able to live there anymore. that is where the "goodness" ends for me.

the fact that these people were not entitled to it, but Mr & Mrs. Investment banker are.

in what way is it good for those living in apartments to have their rents doubled and tripled?

to not be able to afford to purchase a house (making decent money) in the neighborhood that they grew up in?

the only good it is, is if you own and want to move OUT of the area. and in those "questionable" areas, the owners generally don't live there anyway.

I am not sure where you live, but it's not great for anyone where I do.

This is the exact case on LI. I could never afford to buy in the neighborhoods that I knew as a child.
That's the whole process of real estate- affordable neighborhoods, the homes get purchased by people that see it's charm, and eventually it transforms.
This is why i bought in Patchogue.
But I can't imagine that any of the locals are angry about it- becasue raising real estate values are a good thing. Buit these owners live there- so that's the NYC difference.

Oh that's a whole different story- I would be devastated if the "Main Street" charm made way to Burger Kings.
It seems, on LI- the opposite occurs- a neighborhood is nicer the more boutique-ey and full of uniqueness it is.

Re: Another city question...those that are born and bred

let me preface by saying I live in williamsburg and am not a hipster. nor is dh.

the changes made to williamsburg are great. 10 years ago you wouldnt be cuaght dead walking down bedford.

and im assuming youve read the latest issue of TONY. greenpoint being the next "hot" neighborhood.

i love williamsburg. and i'm sorry but i know TONSSSSSSSSS of people that grew up here and have accents.

the only thing i hate is that they are building tons and tons and tons of condo for wayyyy too much money for manhattanites to come and take our town. we are being pushed out. its really sad.

p.s. the hipster movement has certainly downsized. theyre all going back to ohio and oklahoma.. where they belong. i'msorry, i just have no respect for trust fund babies.

eta: it IS sad however how i've seen ppl go out of business due to the extreme raised rent.

the day i saw a "Subway" 'restaurant' being put up across the street from my apartment i cringed.

The hipster movement in w'burg has been going on a bit longer than you think. I moved there 6 years ago and everyone thought it was because I wanted to be "trendy." Soooo not even close to the truth. I told everyone that by the time the "up and coming" hit my part of the neighborhood I'd be long gone. Moved out 2 years ago and Division Avenue where I lived is still as run down as it was when I moved in.

But you're right - I'd drive to the north side with my doors locked but I'd never ever walk it. I did not like living there, but maybe that was because I was on the south side.

I think you have it reversed. The place where you wouldn't wanna be caught alone at night was always "Los Sures" or the "Southside" as it was eventually renamed by the newer folk...LOL

BTW, I wouldn't drive anywhere in NYC without locking my doors...I love my peoples but that doesn't mean I trust them! Chat Icon

Re: Another city question...those that are born and bred

I think its great when neighborhoods in NYC are improved (less crime, less graffiti, more family friendly, etc). but as long as the flavor of the neighborhood is not changed (culturally, etc.). I agree if people who came in changed the neighborhood to a point where it is no longer recognizable, that would not be right. And it wouldn't be right for hardworking people and families to have to leave their beloved neighborhoods because of the gentrification.

I know how you feel. I was so sad when Pete's Ice cream on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn closed and a Ben and Jerry's opened on Court Street. Chat Icon

I also remember Smith street in 1997- vs. Smith street in 2001- when I moved there. Such a difference.

I agree- Corporate America is killing Manhattan and along with Ratner, are killing Brooklyn. But I take no issue with the people who want to reside in these communities.

oops, i meant 10 years ago. my bad. 6 years ago is when it really started to "kick off".

but i know, it was still a little shady.
yeah the south side is still a bit "scarier".

its amazing the differences made in just 2 or 3 years

My best friend has lived in Williamsburg for 11 years. I remember visiting him in 1999 and going to Bedford Ave, without a problem Chat Icon

i am assuming this was in the daytime? 1999 was only 7 years ago, when it was already getting better, but it was still no where as safe as it is now. i know alot of people whove been in the neighborhood for about the same as your friend, 11 years and they all say how much its changed. in the 5 years that i've been here it has changed significantly as well. when i first moved here i was pretty nervous of the southside. now i actually want to move there!

i MAY move to Bushwick though this summer. although i'd rather stay in Greenpoint. Bushwick is up and coming too.

The way I see it is...if even RED HOOK is "up and coming"...and we're talking here about the last bastion of in-sanity, a place with historically some of the highest crime-rates in all of NYC...then all hope of holding on to the bad ol' past is lost! LOL Seriously though, I'm glad to see it's getting better, but it should be better for all and not just for the big businesses and the high-muck-a-mucks

I have gone to the nabes my whole life. you need to be smart. you are not in Kansas anymore. I love how crime in areas surprises the newbies.

It is hard not to be surprised when your car window gets smashed twice in less than a month and the car is parked right in front of your apartment. I understand the whole "Welcome to Brooklyn thing" and "It is a cost of living in Brooklyn" but twice in one month? You try not being surprised Chat Icon

Honestly, it does suck. I've been there. I feel for you. Trust me. I had my car stolen - goodbye, never to be seen again - it was parked less than 30 feet from the front door of my building AND there is a Police precinct around the corner ON MY block as well as a FDNY firehouse. So what does that say? That means that when you move to a big city, don't let anything come as a surprise.

I'm not. b/c I've lived there my whole life, and I am not deluded enough to think that the invasion of Starbucks has defeated the forces of naughty behavior and evil doers. Chat Icon

that doesn't mean I am immune to it...it's happened to us a few times...and just recently in fact...in that other hot spot, Astoria. I know how much it suks...but I don't think "how did this happen here"

some of these new blogs kill me with their "surprise" that's what the realtors leave out.

it's like I say to all my friends...it may look fine and dandy during the day, but I know what comes out at NIGHT! Chat Icon

A word of advice to anyone looking to move into an "up and coming" area (or any area for that matter) - and I'm being dead serious - forget what the realtor says. If you happen to have the time, go to that block you're interested in on a Fri or Sat night around 11PM (preferably summertime) and check out what's going on in the nabe...cuz that's when the curtain drops, the show is on, and all the real 'surprises' are in full effect.
