Another Lent Question
I guess I have a very different view of lent than I did as a kid. Then it was you give up soda or chocolate, etc. Now I notice a lot of people give up things like carbs, junk food etc. Not only because it's something they like but because it's something good for them, which is what i've done in recent years too. But now I'm wondering, is it selfish to give up something for lent that in giving it up, is beneficial to you? Like is it selfish to give up carbs because you know part of the reason you're doing it is to lose weight, etc?
What are your thoughts?
On anothr note, the priest gave a great homily tonight and what struck me was how he said you have to give up something that distracts you from doing things you need to do, or something from your surroundings that can "own" you if you let it. For some people it's food, work, an organization, TV

Re: Another Lent Question
IMO lent is about giving up something that is HARD to give up...
wether it is good for you or not is irrelevant. Not the point at all

So the point is the struggle?
What if its something you have to give up anyway for your health..like a diabetic who just got diagnosed and needs to cut down on sugar, using lent to kickstart that?
I'm not sure if I'm getting across what I'm trying to say... It's just something I was thinking about today.

Re: Another Lent Question
On a serious note...It's supposed to be about sacrifice. So you are supposed to give up something you are going to really miss. Or, as one priest said one year (and I loved his homily) it not necessarily about giving something up. It could be about doing something for somebody on a regular basis. Volunteering somewhere, that kind of thing. More of a sacrifice so that we appreciate what we DO have. I like that idea better and am going to lean in that direction this year.

YES it is supposed to be a struggle a sacrifice... And if not eating sugar is a sacrifice for the diabetic....then that counts regardless if it is good for them or not

Re: Another Lent Question
But isn't it an incomplete sacrifice if you're getting something out of it? isn't it better to sacrifice for the sake of sacrfiice alone and not get anything out of it yourself? If not, isn't it more like a new year's resolution than a lenten sacrifice?
Just some thoughts

You sound like Phoebe from Friends in that episode when she was trying to find a sacrafice that wasn't a benefit to her too.

I see what you are saying, but I also feel that by helping someone in a nursing home, or visiting hospitals, etc can give you mental satisfaction. Doing something like this will make me feel better about myself.. It's not necessarily physical (like loosing weight), but I am still getting something out of it. Does that make sense?

I understand what you are saying but I cannot really think of anything that would fall into this category of sacrifice without any benefit what so ever.

Is there ever truly an unselfish act? Whether it's physical, mental or emotional?

I agree. I gave up sweets and starches (bread, potatoes, rice, etc) because I overindulge and it is very difficult for me to give that up.
If I happen to loose weight in the process, then that's good too
