another medical billing question
Ques for those that may work in medical billing- I went to an in-network doctor over a month ago, and got a biopsy done, and I paid both co-pays for the office visit and lab fee... i just rec'd an explanation of benefits from the insurance company stating that the lab that the biopsy was sent to was not in network, and I rec'd a check directly for a portion of what the doc office billed.. i called the doc and they said they are working on getting the lab onto the insurance plan, and to sign the check and forward it to them... now i am just worried since i have had 2 more biopsies since then, and i had no control over what lab it was sent to... am i responsible for getting stuck with the bill for whatever was left over that the insurance did not send a check for, since i technically had no say in which lab it went to? The doc office said they didn't know when I asked them this.

I think technically you would be responsible, BUT, a similar thing has happened to me and it was the DRs fault for sending it to the wrong lab. I had made clear which one I wanted it sent to. They wound up taking care of the situation. I would call the office and speak to whom ever is in charge of billing. If they knew the lab wasn't on the plan they should have told you. Maybe they can resubmit once they are on the plan? Good luck!!
