Another SAHM ??

Did you give up a(college degreed) career ?? teacher, lawyer, doctor??

I gave up my degree job two years ago to start a new career that's more condusive to being a mom. I have a journalism degree and worked for a newspaper for 4 years. I left to go back to teaching dance with my mom and just took over her business this September. I only work 4 afternoons a week (my mom and MIL will watch the baby) and I have school holidays and summers off.
It's the best of both worlds. I don't make as much as I could at a full time job, but I make pretty good money for only working about14 hours a week, 9.5 months a year. And I'm able to be at home with our son about 90% of the time. Luca will only be with his grandmas for 2-3 hours a day until his daddy comes to get him.

I left an accounting job. I have a BBA in Accounting. I don't feel like it was a waste to go to college. I enjoyed it had a great career until I gave it up to move to Ireland with DH. I will always have it to fall back on.

lawyer. This is child # 1 and so far I'm a SAHM. DD is 4 mos and we're still trying to decide whether I'm going back or not.

I am a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). If I want to maintain my license and registration, I need to take continuing ed courses every year. So while I left my job behind for now, I still take courses and seminars to keep up my PE license.

I was in sales andmarketing for electronic parts- I really didnt like my corporate job so I was glad to leave. I do have a college degree but I dont feel that I was using it where I worked. Im hoping when ( if) I do go back I can go into a field that I enjoy more so at least I will be happy to work and not feel twice as bad as leaving my son to go to a miserable dead end job.

I gave up a high paying job in Manhattan about two years ago for something that would allow me to be home P/T and work P/T. I now work 3 days a week.

I was in the finance industry, long tedious hours and crapola pay. Being a mommy is much more rewarding

i gave up my degree before I had my daughter and entered an excellent career. I was at my peek when I left I am ok with that now. It took me a year being a SAHM to adjust to my new life style.

i was a speech pathologist. i don't think my degree was a total waste though since i'm sure i won't be a sahm forever and my job can be very mommy friendly.

I need to answer my own question I am a dental hygienist working max 12 hours a week very locally. So I didn't really give it up, just cut it down dramatically(and my wrists thank me for that).

I did....although I don't know if I miss it all that much! I was a copy editor, worked in art buying before that for the same company. It's definitely an adjustment. I'm glad that I have my B.S. though, because I think eventually I'll want to work/have to work so it'll come in handy.

I agree!! I love hearing about how smart our mommies are here!! A degree is permanent, something nobody can take away. So even if it' s not being used now, it's wonderful and it's something to fall back on....... You Go Mommies!!!

I agree. You have earned any degree, certification or work experience that you may have- it can never be taken away from you. I have a B. S. in Elem Ed and am a certified teacher. When I had DD 2 years ago, I was working in Pharmacueticals- great job, great $$$$$. I planned on going back to work after maternity leave, but just couldn't do it. Do I miss work? Not the actual job- but I miss fancy clothes,beautiful bags and shoes, perfectly manicured hands and feet, happy hours and co-workers to talk to and spend time with. But..... I love being with Ava. She is the best thing that ever happened to me. I would like to be at home till she or any future children start kindergarten---if it is financially possible. I struggled with my decision and a lot of guilt for a long time. Don't do what I did- just enjoy!!!!

i was a preschool teacher...i wasnt there for the pay i just liked my job and it did pay the bills but it wasnt worth it for me to go back to work. I always wanted to stay home with the baby anyway. YOu have to weigh out all the bills you have per month and then include childcare...see if its worth working. a friend of mine is still working at the school and brings home practically nothing because half the money goes to the daycare where she works because her daughter is there full time and she only gets 50% off tuition... i definitely had to give up things like weekend shopping for myself and splirging on things but its worth it for me to be home with Bella everyday. i wouldnt change it for anything...yes it gets tough at times but you always work it out. good luck!

I was a hospital administrator in the city running 2 Pediatric Divisions. I was in a position where you need a MPH but I did not have it ,only my Bachelor's I had worked my way up the ladder through my 9 years there.

Downside, if I have to go back to work one day, I do have the experience to find another job but I don't have the Master's which would hinder my job opportunities ( I think)

That being said, I had a lot to think about becoming a SAHM, but in the end it is well worth it to me to be home with my preious Jacob.

I have a Master's degree in Counseling. I'm a Certified Rehab Counselor (CRC) and Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I still work 1-2 days a week in my field. I enjoy working in the field part-time because it enables me to keep my skills current. I will always be able to find work in this field when I'm ready to return full-time. That being said I have no regrets about becoming a SAHM.
