Re: another senior prom cancelled.

For some reason this issue seems like the BIGGEST deal to me. I've been out of High School almost 10 years and I feel like it's my prom that's being canceled. I feel horrible for these kids. Chaminade is NOT an easy school, these kids lasted 4 years there and deserve to experiance a prom. It's a memory they will keep with them for the rest of their lives. Regardless if the school cancels prom, I gaurantee these kids will still have a party that isn't chaperoned. Not only that, but Prom was a time for everyone in your class to come together. It didn't matter what click you were in, you were all there. I gaurantee kids will be left out of the private parties causeing other issues in and of itself. Who cares if people are trying to out-do eachother? That is life... they might as well experiance it in high school since it will be a part of their lives once they enter the real world.

I find the whole thing extremely upsetting and I wish there was something I could do to help Chat Icon

i wonder if St. Mary's and Sacred Heart will follow.....

Probably not they aren't run by the same order....but I am sure there are strict warnings and punishments that will be handed down if anything is found to be going on at the prom itself.

I can't wait for one of these idiot parents to sponsor a "prom" type party and then be liable when there is underage drinking and drug use going on!

I think the guy from Kellenberg said last year they told some kids who had put a deposit down on a hamptons house that they could not do it and they made whoever they were going to rent it from, give back the money, and then one of the parents re-rented it for the kids!!!Chat Icon I personally think that is insane.

I have chaperoned proms in Catholic schools, and if those parents knew some of the stuff that goes on,

That's a rather blanket statement, no?

Kids are going to be kids... you can teach them to make the right decisions, but eventually they are going to do what they do. Would you rather them do drugs and drink in a parking lot somewhere? I am in no way condoling doing drugs or underage drinking... but let's face it.. it happens... and canceling a prom isn't going to stop it.

Perhaps it is, but I am speaking from my own experience, from being at school sponsored events where teachers and staff are asked to control what is coming into the dances and dealing with students who show up drunk and stoned. It can be a very stressful night for staff and parents get very upset when they hear about things like this after the fact.

you're probably right.

i think the worst part about all this is the kellenberg is claming they gave the kids repeated warning about their behavior and that there woudl be consequenses if they did not oblidge. so the kids had the chance, but i'm sure they thought that they would never cancel the prom. so, they were given the chance, they just didn't take it

I don't know what goes on in public schools, because as I said, my experience was in Catholic ones. But I think one of the main issues here is that the main reason the prom got cancelled is that the school is a Catholic one and the administration felt that the activities going on went against their values and mission.

The school isn't saying that cancelling the prom is going to stop it....they are simply stating that they don't want to be a part of it therefore they are not sponsering a prom.

No you're right, it isn't going to stop it. But I don't think the school should be helping to make a place for it to happen. Or the parents for that matter. Again, that is simply my opinion.

I feel that if fair warning was given and they didn't listen then so be it. There are consequences to inapropriate actions and this is one of them. I don't think it's fair that some have to miss out for the misbehaver of others...but in this case I doubt the school can pick & choose who goes to the prom.

right, i understand that, but what things exactly? pre-marital sex? I didn't have sex at my prom Chat Icon Drinking, drugs... that stuff didn't go on at my prom, it happened on the "booze cruise" after prom... Chat Icon but my point is regardless if they cancel prom, it's still going to go on.

My high school scheduled graduation the morning after prom to try and stop us from going to the hamptons and staying out too late... all it did was cause a lot of tired graduates to show up for the ceremony and postpone the hamptons post prom party for that weekend....

Ok, this I can understand.. and it makes sense. But I still think the kids are entitled to a prom.. they've worked hard for it and deserve a night to celebrate.

All of the above. And I am sure you can say what happened at your prom more so than people who did not go to it. All I was trying to say is that I think some parents who send their kids to a Catholic school (and pay quite a bit of money for it) have high expectations of what the school allows at their events. If the school is saying they are having a difficult time controlling certain things and are unable to sponsor an event that is in line with their values, I understand why they might cancel it.

I do too, which is why I said I am not sure I agree with it, but understand it. My class in HS got screwed out of many things because the class ahead of us got in so much trouble.

I don't think renting houses out east are insane for the kids...it's the last summer before they head off to college....my friends and I stayed in the hamptons prom weekend, and a few other times over that last summer...I don't know what would make the school think they could dictate what takes place off school grounds and not during school hours.
