I don't think renting houses out east are insane for the kids...it's the last summer before they head off to college....my friends and I stayed in the hamptons prom weekend, and a few other times over that last summer...I don't know what would make the school think they could dictate what takes place off school grounds and not during school hours.
ditto

Re: another senior prom cancelled.
I agree with moehick I bet a "parent" will sponsor a prom- or just have a HUGE shindig at either their house or rent a house for the kids. I dont think the schools canceling proms are going to stop the kids from still partying and drinking. they will definately find a way to still do it.

I totally agree, but I think the school is just trying to find a way of putting their foot down and not sponsoring a prom that goes against their values or promotes drinikng. In that case let the parents throw a prom.

I think the re-renting it after they had told the parents that the students could not do that is insane. Basically the parents said "Screw you" to the school. But, whatever - I understand your point of view, but I just think maybe the parents could have shown a bit more respect.
And, I think the reason they thought they could dictate, was because all though it was afterwards, it had to do with a school sponsered event. And I think, don't private schools have more leeway in that respect anyway?

That's like the school telling parents they don't want their students to wear jeans on weekends. Who are they to say what they can and can not do after school hours?

Re: another senior prom cancelled.
They weren't saying what the kids can and can not do after the prom...
The schools didn't approve of after prom behavior and simply chose not to sponser an event that leads to it.

I don't really see it as the same thing, but like I said, JMO.
