another spinoff to middle class
If a family is making under the amount of money you consider to be middle class, what do you call them?
Poor? Poverty stricken?
Maybe this where the terms lower middle class and upper middle class come from.

It really depends upon the number of people in the family and when they purchased their home. Lets say you purchased your home 10 years ago - you do not need as high a salary as you would if you purchased your home a year ago to afford the same lifestyle.

Re: another spinoff to middle class
I think it depends on how much below that income they make. To me middle class means being able to afford the necessities without worrying non-stop about making ends meet. That means health insurance, a car/car insurance if necessary for the area, a safe place to live (not necessarily own), a computer with internet, phone, and money towards retirement. Having enough of a cushion to handle a crisis such as health issues or home/house issues.
If you cannot afford those things (health insurance, food, or necessities) I would consider it lower class.

It's relative to their expenses.

I agree. If you make $50,000/year, but the house is paid off, taxes are really low, cars are paid off, you go camping locally for vacations, so it's very low $$, you could be better off than someone making $100,000 and paying $4k/month mortgage, $2k/month for car payments, $$$$ for taxes.
It comes down more to how much you have after "necessities" are paid for.

Re: another spinoff to middle class
I think lower middle class. There's a whole spectrum of people below middle class who are not poor or poverty stricken. We're below middle class, but we have cell phones and cable tv. We struggle though. As a child we never went on vacation but with very few exceptions we could afford food.
For me right now, I don't want to say I'm poor. I have a car, I have a cellphone. I'm going on my first vacation in over 3 years soon (yay!), but although I have health insurance I struggle to meet deductibles and pay for my medications. My car is also getting old and it's in the shop and I'm really afraid because I don't have any option to pay the bill other than credit cards or once again emptying my meager savings. It gets a little scary sometimes, but I definitely would not call myself poor or poverty stricken. So many people have it unimaginably worse.
