Since it is out of her house I would just round up to $100.

The difference here is that in a salon part of the cost goes to the owner....many times they have to rent the chair.
In her home its all hers.

Re: another tipping question-highlights
I get my hair done at someone's home and I tip 20%. For me it is the service and not the location so I think the tip is deserved.

another tipping question-highlights
This debate shows up here a lot. She works out of her home, so has zero overhead, and doesn't work for a "boss" that she has to pay a portion of her earnings to. So that $95 is all going in her pocket, vs maybe $45 of it at a salon. I don't get my hair done, but I don't tend to tip self employed people.

this is how I look at it too but I would still probably tip something. I would probably do $10 max

Same. Even if she does pocket a little more, make her day. You're probably paying a little less than you would at a salon, too.

I get where you're coming from but just wanted to point out that she doesn't have zero overhead, she has to pay personally for the chemicals and other materials used for the highlights. My sister is a hair stylist and I basically pay for the materials she uses when she does my hair for free, a salon would cover that if it were reversed. I always tip even if they work independently because I always assume there's some kind of overhead I'm not thinking of.

Of course. I meant no rent of a building, no rent of a chair, etc.

That might be the case that she has expenses but then it would be assumed that since this is her business she would work those costs into the price she charges. So those "costs" would be worked into what she charges. I think it is different since it is it your sister she doesn't charge you so it is nice to cover the supplies needed and a bit extra. If she was doing it for free, it would be a different question.
I don't think anyone suggests not tipping anything if she wants to. Just that the "rule of thumb" is that you don't generally have to tip self employed/business owners. If she is happy with the job done I am sure a tip is always welcome, but the amount might be different than an employee of a salon where 20% is customary.

another tipping question-highlights
I just had highlights done at home by someone. It was $85. I had a hundred dollar bill on me. I planned to give her the whole hundred. But when I gave it to her, she never even asked if I needed change. Just took the hundred and said thank you. I thought that was pretty rude.

Re: another tipping question-highlights
If it's out of her house then she owns the business. I don't tip if they own the business. If it was a stylist at a salon I would tip $10.

I want to say that I do tip my at home stylist, however the items you mention like color, chemicals etc- should be covered in the price she charges- in this case the $95. She should be charging enough to cover her time, her materials and a profit margin. Overhead is more things like rent, salaries of employees etc

I know, just playing devils advocate and pointing out that there are different costs associated with either scenario that someone might not realize. Either way if the price is reasonable and I can swing it I try to tip.

My hair salon is pretty inexpensive...that being said I tip my stylist 20% and even more when she does me at her house because it's usually an inconvenience for her since it's on her days off.

out of her house she keeps all the profit so I would not tip
In fact, even in a salon, if the owner is your nail tech , hairdresser etc, they should not except a tip as they keep the full profit.
years ago I went to a salon and the owner NEVER took a tip for the above stated reason.
I am sure I am the minority

see, to me its not an inconvenience bc she knows she is making the full profit and its worth it to instead of sharing with the salon or else she would not do it

I would give a little something - $10. Agree, it's out the house and she owns her own business so I don't think think 20% is necessary. In geneal with salon treatments I sometimes look at hours/length of service and give based on that $8-15 per hour not always a strict 20%..

Plus I LOVE my hairdresser so I don't mind at all. But this is a very personal choice for people. I am just a good tipper I guess especially to people who go out of their way for me.
