My hair salon is pretty inexpensive...that being said I tip my stylist 20% and even more when she does me at her house because it's usually an inconvenience for her since it's on her days off.

see, to me its not an inconvenience bc she knows she is making the full profit and its worth it to instead of sharing with the salon or else she would not do it

She always feels bad taking it and always offers change but she is doing me a favor by working out of her home so I see it as me inconveniencing her. Plus I LOVE my hairdresser so I don't mind at all. But this is a very personal choice for people. I am just a good tipper I guess especially to people who go out of their way for me.

please done think Im not telling you what to do, IJMO. I say it all the time, IMO NYS and LI is very tip happy. I like my hair dresser as well but when she did it out of her home I did not tip, now that she is at a salon as an employee not renting a chair I tip.

This debate shows up here a lot. She works out of her home, so has zero overhead, and doesn't work for a "boss" that she has to pay a portion of her earnings to. So that $95 is all going in her pocket, vs maybe $45 of it at a salon. I don't get my hair done, but I don't tend to tip self employed people.

I agree 100% I might tip $5 but not more, don't care what service I'm getting. Salon it's a different story because they rent the chair and the owner gets most of the cost.

years ago I went to a salon and the owner NEVER took a tip for the above stated reason.

I am sure I am the minority

I go to a salon where the wife highlights my hair and the husband cuts it. The total cost is about $250. In total, I tip about $35 ($20 for wife, $10 for husband and $5 to assistant). I know that doesn't add up to 20%, but given that they are the owners, I feel that its fair.

I'd just give an even $100 in this case. Tipping is for people that make a low wage. Anyone working from home makes a huge profit and materials don't cost much.

ETA: I tip 20% in a salon.

She's the business owner. If I had a 100 dollar bill I would just give her that but IMO she shouldn't accept more than what she is charging. At a salon, to a regular stylist, I tip 20%.

I just had highlights done at home by someone. It was $85. I had a hundred dollar bill on me. I planned to give her the whole hundred. But when I gave it to her, she never even asked if I needed change. Just took the hundred and said thank you. I thought that was pretty rude.

I don't think a tip would be necessary. But overhead is more than just rent. Oil gas and electricity that is used in doing a client counts as overhead. If you feel like tipping do so. If not that's fine.

Hairstylist here. If it's a big favor emergency thing at home a few extra dollars is nice. If she regularly does hair at her home then no tip to maybe ten dollars is totally fine!!!
