Another what would you give tip question...

We're having a party for my DS communion on Saturday at a restaurant. They already charged us a 20% gratuity ($480) and noted on the contract that this is for servers only - they recommend we tip the Maitre'd at the end of event.
We're only having 35-40 people and it's a 3 hr party....how much do you think we should tip?

20% is standard. If they do a crappy job, (meaning you never see them and/or are useless to your event) then I’d lessen it what you feel they were worth to the party

I'm not the OP, but just a question. you're saying that she should have a gratuity for the wait staff of 20%, and another 20% for the matre'd? So effectively, the tip is 40% on the bill?

so $960 on a $2400 bill?

If that is normal... tipping is crazy out of control

I'd probably do $100-200 for the m'aitre d for a 3-hour event. More for a longer event. 20% is too much.

Yes this. And it also depends what they are actually doing for you. If not a whole heck of a lot, that would change my answer

I find it weird a restaurant has a maitre’d. Who have you been dealing with all along?
If you feel the need to tip I would say $2-3 per person since it’s a small party but $50 should be fine.
Is this a local restaurant? Where?

20% of automatic gratuity.

I left that out lol

If she’s paying $480 in gratuity -20% of that So just about $100

Right?? Is this just a sit-down meal? Bc then it’s probably not necessary at all.

A maitre d does a lot behind the scenes you might not realize. S/he oversees all of the servers, helps keep your party timed correctly, including making sure the chef prepares the food at the correct time.

They typically recommend $3/$4pp for the matre'd as a tip.

I have had quite a few parties at restaurants and have never had a maitre d. I think of it usually at a wedding or more upscale place...

Thank you all for the responses. We were thinking about $100 for a tip and that seems to be the general consensus of the group. I just wanted to make sure we gave enough.

Then it could be the Manager. Someone is still working in that capacity.

I find all this stuff out of control really. what's next we're supposed to tip the chefs separately too?

Yes, someone has to manage the servers and timing of things from the restaurant's side.... Seems like a general function of the restaurant manager, seems like a general part of their job...

And seems like it should be included in the price you are paying to have a party there.
All of this tipping shit is so annoying and over the top.
I want a tip to do MY job.

LOL
Meanwhile my DH refuses to let anyone park our cars..
So we use the lot next door if we have to.
I'd ask for a refund on my fee!

I mean listen, people have to get paid a decent amount to do their job. I don't object to people getting paid, but honestly, all of it IMHO should be in the cost of the party and included in the bill in an unambiguous way. Ideally, there should be no tip on the bill, it should be I'm paying $40 per head and the restaurant pays everyone what they should be making, like every other FN job in the world.

Exactly.
I am a huge tipper when we go to a restaurant.
I over tip the bartender, I over tip the waiter, I overtip the nail girl, I over tip the hair girl etc
But my issue is- when you book a party they slap a gratuity on and then say- oh but that doesn't include this one, or that one.
Then you end up paying way more than you may have budgeted.
Ridiculous
