anti smoking commercial with that little boy
They just interviewed the director of the commercial on the Today show and they got that little boy to cry by actually scaring him into crying and having his mom walk away from him in a busy train station!!!!!

How could his parents be okay with that? I don't think I could put my kid through that intentionally.

Re: anti smoking commercial with that little boy
I may get flamed big time for this but I'm going to say it anyway.
It's a very important message to get out. And it's got people talking. The little boy was crying for less than 5 mins. The commerical was done with 5 cameras so they only had to do 1 take. His mother (the woman in the commercail) was right there. Child Services was on the set and felt he wasn't in danger. I believe the message is getting lost with everyone worrying about if the child was really crying or not.
How many times have you left your child with a babysitter and they cried. Thinking you weren't coming back. How many of you did CIO for more than 5 mins? Thinking you weren't going in to get them.
I really don't see a difference. Sorry but that's JMO.
Let's not loose sight of the message.

If my kid crying like that had an end result of even only 5 people quitting smoking I would be fine with my decision.
I wish my DH would quit, he tries but it never sticks. His own mother died from lung cancer from smoking

I agree, it's not like they were torturing him. He cried for maybe 1 mintue (if that, the commercial only like 30 sec long and he is only crying for the last 10 sec.) I just don't get the big deal, I'm fairly certain he isn't scarred for life and obviously the message is getting out there and hopefully saving thousands of lives.

ITA. As hard as it is to see a child cry it is not a rare occurrence and I doubt he is scarred for life.

I get what you are saying, and I thought about the small amount of crying versus the big picture, but they can use someone other than my kid to get the message out.
For me, there is a difference. CIO is for the benefit of the child-they need to learn how to sleep for their well being.
This commercial is for the benefit of society-a good message-but not one I would let them use my kid for since there is no direct benefit to my child (yes, indirectly we need to get the anti-smoking message out, but there are other ways to do that besides making my kid cry so I'll take those).
I also think kids crying in their crib to learn how to sleep is different from crying in an airport. CIO at home is in a familiar setting, surrounded by things they know. I don't know, for me it is different.

I agree 100% and hoenstly as someone who lost a parent to lung cancer I would allow my child to be in a commercial like it if it could possibly mean that one more child out there wont lose a parent or grandparent because my DS cried from being "scared" for 1 minute!
My DS is part of this society so his crying also could directly benefit him and his kids and grandkids!
The message is powerful and hopefully helps people. While now that crying boy, that everyone is concerned about, is home playing away with no recollection of what happened htat day yet he is touching lives through this commercial.

Re: anti smoking commercial with that little boy
I have a very hard time watching that commercial...it breaks my heart. And hearing how they made it breaks my heart even further...
BUT, I think it is possibly one of the most convincing, powerful, to the point commericials I have seen in a VERY long time...
I think that if it saves even one life, the momentary distress that little boy incurred and will likely never remember is worth it...

I Agree Completely! My DH and I saw that on the Today show today and talked about it on our way to work. Little kids cry oftern throughout the day, if one 5 minute cry does a world of good for people, its worth it. My DD cries when I leave her with DH so I can use the bathroom! I'm sure she thinks I'm not coming back at that moment and is scared.
And, this is a short clip - if this really bothers so many people, why do they not say anything about movies where child actors are kidnapped, raped, cry, etc. Those are for pure entertainment value and nobody ever brings that up.

I wouldn't let me kids do those things either, at least not when they don't have a good concept of fake and real.
For me, I would not want to put my kid through an unnecessary feeling of abandonment to get out a message that can be delivered in other ways or by someone else.
I do like the commercial and I think it is effective as it brought me to tears but I would not let my kid do it.

I knew it! I just knew it. It was way tooo real. My heart pounded and broke in pieces watching it. I was sick to my stomach after that. I literally walked into my girls rooms (they were sleeping)I rubbed their heads, and told them I loved them.
eta: yeah I got the message. I quit 4 years ago. If I still smoked I would've thrown up after seeing that.

I agree with all of this. Directors make children cry for lots of commercials. I think the commercial is one of the best they have used to get people to quit.
